I can't believe 2016 was already close to 3 years ago. Man, time has really flown. I think I was still in my first semester of graduate school that year.

easy for bone hugger to say 20 something years later yeah i would have koed him, well he was in the ring with you in 87, that was the time, instead of holding all night

Had he followed up on that monster uppercut he hurt Tyson with in the 12th round he probably could have. But he stepped back, smiled and admired his work and didn't finish the job. That probably haunts him every day since that fight.

Quite possibly, though he obviously wasn't there to win.

Imagine being Smith, years later, watching the Tyson-Douglas fight?

I remember this fight well, and for all the wrong reasons.

'Bonecrusher' Smith did survive the full 12 rounds with Tyson, but only because that seemed to be his sole objective. He defended and held virtually all the way through the fight and was docked points for it.

Yup, regrets.

Tyson was on wobbly legs, hurt and open for shots. Smith maybe could have finished it had it not been the last seconds of the 12th round. First time we had ever seen Mike Tyson hurt in the ring up to that point. Props to Mike for being the tough bastard he is though.

no way.

tyson was not hurt nor staggered at all. he was in control the whole fight and smith did nothing. no one ever got mike out of there with one shot, it takes many many huge shots to drop him.

 The 3 minute highlight package suggests it was a good fight. Which it sure as hell wasn't.

It was a stink-fest. - But Smith actually landed decent shots throughout the fight, the few times he let his hands go. He fought scared, like most of Mike's opponents, so he never really had a chance. He lost the fight before he got into the ring.

Like I always say: "The only way to beat a huge puncher is to punch him first. As hard and as often as you can."
Even the brilliantly-defensive Sweet Pea knew when to attack. (and how!) Sometimes you just gotta' take a chance.

I read another interview where Bonehugger said he was caught with a right hand early in the fight and at that moment he was struck with the overwhelming urge to keep hugging Mike as much and for as long as he possibly could for the rest of the evening, all the while with this song playing over and over in his head:

Yeah, he was probably thinking “shit, if only I had overcome my overwhelming urge to keep hugging the man and thrown like 500 more punches I could have potentially, maybe, possibly not have lost by such a wide decision”. In reality he would have got knocked the fuck out had he not employed the John “Huggybear” Ruiz tactics early and often.
