Weyes Blood's new album currently number 1 on RYM.

Anyone listened to it yet? I think it was DomB who was too embarrassed to listen to their last album in front of his missus or something....

I think we're far enough into the year to say that this year is looking pretty cack album wise tbh... Some good music about but a dearth of good albums

Not sure how I feel about the album yet, but this opener is amazing. My favourite track of 2019 so far. If you dont like this, dont bother with the rest of the album.

Some albums I have been enjoying this year:

KOKOROKO [EP] - strong afrobeat jazz grooves

Ibibio Sound Machine - Doko Mien
also funky afrobeat influenced stuff, less jazz influenced than traditional afrobeat (and stuff like the album above)....more electronic influences. I like a lot of the songs, but bit uneven....still fun overall though. Probably won't be one of my favs by the end of the year even though this song here will defo one of my favourites:

Dexter Story - Bahir

yet again great african-inspired music, less afrobeat and more influences from East Africa....ethiopian jazz, Taureg desert-bluesy grooves etc. again with modern production and some electronic flourishes.

White Denim - Side Effects
As you would expect from White Denim this is just a really fun rock album, I think I like it even better than their last one. Probably the best since Stiff. Just tight grooves and catchy hooks, as I say I lot of fun. Also went to see them live a few months ago and they were brilliant.

The Gloaming - 3
more of the same from The Gloaming (Irish folk/trad super group) but that's a compliment, since they are masters at what they do...namely performing amazing compositions of Irish folk/traditional music in a way which is equally indebted to classical music and certain kinds of Steve Reich-esque minimalism.

The Comet is Coming - Trust in the Lifeforce of the Deep Mystery
Outstanding space-y jazz-fusion in the tradition of Sun Ra, Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders etc.

I'm also loving the debut from W.H. Lung posted by DomB already.

First listened to this a few days ago, but given it another listen this evening...really good ambient music, blends traditional Japanese musical styles with 80's and 90's ambient influences along with contemporary electronic music. Has a very refined, ethereal sound.

Love the artwork too, may get a vinyl copy.

Booked up to go here...

Alldayer in an old mill in Salford... Black midi, black country new road and withered hand I'm desperate to see.. Cocaine Piss supposed to be decent... These look interesting too, Woven Skull, trippy repetitive shizzle knocked up in a farmhouse in Country Leitrim...

Been watching the reputational rise of these boys with interest, Dublin post punkers Fontaines DC...without ever seeing quite what the fuss is about from the live stuff on YouTube...

... Have to admit though the album is really very very good indeed. More complex musically than I was expecting tbh... there's obviously a massive dose of Joy Division in there... never a bad thing...pogues comparisons are inevitable too I guess... but I can also hear elements of the Clash in there, bits of the Fall and even, weirdly, something slightly Smithsy on some tracks.

Cracking album, well worth a listen. Will be in lots of top ten lists come the end of the year I reckon.

Couple more I'm giving some time to...

4982

Debut album that's taken 15 years to come out  classic americana catharsis storytelling. Reflections on a decade lost to smack. Liking the sound of this, reminds me of lambchop a bit.

Du Blonde - lung bread for daddy

4983

More scuzzy confessionals, saw her last year and she really suprised me. Just filthy rocky shit really

Yeah was listening to that the other day, just the first few tracks...didn't grab me but seemed decent. Will have to give it a full listen.
