Who are the greatest performers of all time and by this I don't mean simply people who wrote great music or songs, say like The Beatles... but people who encompass everything a performer and entertainer is, effortlessly dominated the stage and puts everything into it... ideally for me they should be able to play multiple instruments, while singing flawlessly while soaked to the skin in sweat from dancing like a loon.

You don't have to be a huge fan of their music (which some of them below I'm not) to see that there's something unique about them....

A few candidates I'd think are obvious and throw out there..

Michael Jackson

Freddie Mercury

Prince

Elvis Presley

James Brown

There are way too many in music. It's not until you see a live show up front that you realise how good and professional professional (yes, twice) musicians are. It's just as if a switch is flicked.

George Michael
Madonna

Both did ridiculous amounts of hard work in the studio and also live.

Pet Shop Boys. Miles and miles ahead of their time. Superb music, written well, performed well in studio, live etc. Longevity.

Morrissey and Marr. Redefined mid 1980s guitar music and carried two turnips with them for four years.

Depeche Mode. Gahan and company won world records for drug intake and managed to be a bunch of punks from Essex who had a big crack at the USA and managed to crack it. Few bands from these shores have been as successful as they were Stateside.

Jarvis Cocker is an interesting one, although I don't consider him on a level of a Freddie Mercury or something like that, he was definitely one of the few performers of the whole Britpop era.

He put it all out there... definitely agree with Bowie too.

Gene Simmons once mentioned how you would have to carry him off stage after a Kiss performance, and if you didn't he would have wasted everyone's money. I haven't seen Kiss live, but those who have say he and they were true to their promise. They were supposed to be fucking great.

But was Morrissey a performer and entertainer though... I don't know enough about his music and career, I know he has tons of fans but I can't remember seeing any live performance from him where he jumps out as an entertainer.

Post videos of some kind of example.

I was in a four year relationship with a girl who went on and on and on about how great Jarvis Cocker was live. I didn't believe her. We split up in 2002 and remained friends back then and went to Leeds Festival together. Pulp played that year. It took me thirty seconds of Jarvis Cocker being onstage to realise she was right for four years straight. He was the consummate professional, absolutely flawless, and I don't even like Pulp.

Yes and yes.

Performances I would post would be Morrissey solo and they're doctored as they're live videos. I saw him live once in London and he made me fucking cry he was that good, seriously. I shudder to think how good he would have been when put with Johnny Marr in the height of Smithsdom. I haven't searched Smiths live shows because they'll have been made from old Betamax camcorder performances, I can only go on studio and hearsay. Studio Morrissey and Marr are flawless, live apparently they were fucking ace. I was way too young.

Motley Crue are a good shout as well as Metallica, Bob. Saw them both on one bill.

I think Springsteen might best fit the original description best of living performers.

People I haven't seen personally, that would fit the bill.

Queen
Ray Charles
Little Richard
James Brown
Jacko

Prime Elton John is another who to me looks like he was born to stand on a stage.

I mean, if any dude on the planet didn't warrant being bursting with confidence it was Elton John but none of that ever seemed to enter his head and when on stage became this force of nature.

One of the hardest working live bands I ever saw were Losprophets. Look where that ended up.

Feeder were the same, but they still are credible.

Neither fit into the ATG performers but work ethic can't be sniffed at.
