Anyone seen Aquaman? Is it any good? Apparently it's now DC's highest grossing movie.

A friend of mine saw it and reckoned it was really good, but I don't trust his opinion on movies for shit. So I'll ask a bunch of faceless random strangers what they think instead.

It's earned almost a billion dollars so far.

It's already outgrossed Wonder Woman by well over a hundred million dollars.

Black Panther grossed $400 million more, (1.34 billion vs 940 million) but Black Panther was in cinemas for 175 days and Aquaman has been in cinemas for 18 days.

Seems to be a raging success..... but I'm not seeing dozens and dozens of articles about what an amazing, incredible, inspiring, important movie this one is, the way I saw those articles surrounding Wonder Woman and Black Panther.... for some reason......

Anyway, I haven't seen it. Anyone who has - worth a ticket?

I saw it a few weeks ago. I liked it, was good fun. Never takes itself too seriously, and unlike the MCU movies, don't need to see 20 other films before seeing this one.

I read this article the other day

https://nypost.com/2018/12/31/dont-get-too-excited-over-aquamans-box-office-earnings/

TLDR : basically made a ton of cash in china (which weighted its income) but in the long haul will not prove itself to be a classic film

Think it benefited enormously by a very poor selection of movies over the Christmas period this year.

It’s entertaining and worth watching at the cinema. It’s better than other DC movies. I enjoyed it but it’s not a movie I will watch again. I rate it 3 out of 5.

Thought it was a good seletion apart from the apparently terrible Holmes and Watson? Bumblebee got good reviews, so did the awesome Mary Poppins film. That Spiderman movie was meant to be spectacular, Fantastic Beasts, Ralph Breaks the Internet, Bohemian Rapsody and the Grinch were still out too.

While they all might have been good films. None were gonna send the world alight in terms of the box office with the exception of the Grinch which was released so far before Aquaman it's not even really competition even if they were targeting the same audience which I don't think they are.

It basically had a free run during Christmas in terms of going after big box office numbers.

Don't these films usually have a free run though? I always take the kids to the big cinema film every Christmas and this Christmas was the first year we actually had a few options, recent years it has been Star Wars or nothing else, before that it was The Hobbit movies or nothing else and once the choice was so poor we ended up watching the decent Guy Richie Sherlock film. Christmas has been a dumping ground for years or the lets get this released for the kids.

There is usually one big film but the secondary films are usually poised to do better than the the film's this year.

Here is the films released last December. These are US releases because that's where most films make the majority of their box office.
  • The Disaster Artist (Dec. 1) ...
  • I, Tonya (Dec. 8) ...
  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Dec. 15) ...
  • Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (Dec. 20) ...
  • The Greatest Showman (Dec. 20) ...
  • Pitch Perfect 3 (Dec. 22) ...
  • Downsizing (Dec. 22) ...
  • The Post (Dec. 22)
So obviously Star Wars is the main on there but the Greatest Showman and Jumanji are serious draws on their own. One starred Hugh Jackman and the other The Rock and Kevin Hart so even before you look at the movie there will be a market for them given whose in them.

2016 was similar with Rogue one the main one and La La Land and Passengers other options.

2015 again Star Wars but also The Revenant, Hateful Eight, The Big Short.

So while Aquaman was always likely to be the main Christmas movie this year it had relatively little challenge in terms of other movies to eat into its box office but also none of the major major stars had a movie released around Christmas this year which again when you look at the above and previous years is very rare. Again helping Aquaman.

Yep last year had Star Wars alone that would compete with its own audience.

The year before was quite tragic y the look of that and the year before slightly better.

Jumanji will make much more domestically than Aquaman despite having to go up against Star Wars and The Greatest Showman.

I'm not shitting on the movie but its making about what is should be making given the time of year and how shitty the others were gonna be in terms of box office numbers.

I think only Jumanjo is a direct competition for Star Wars. Aquaman domestically had quite a few kid, young adult films out at the same time.

The Greatest Showman made huge money for a film like that and is loved by pretty much everyone to the point it will probably go down as one of the most known films of its generation. Any kid I know literally has seen it hundreds of times now.

And DC movies do not appeal to young kids in the same way Marvel movies do so I don't think they were targeting them that much which is why we saw two big animations released in the first place.

This DC movie was aimed at kids though. It was pretty much a Marvel film, or at least this was the DC film that wasn't meant to be completely shit...Wonder Women was good fun too for the most part.

I think the issue that actually ended up helping Aquaman was it being pushed back on the release and being talked about by having trailers playing for over a year. This film was always going to be huge and hit that kiddie Christmas market it was aimed at. Superhero fans don't want to see sad emo shit.
