Now boxing is the laughing stock of the world.

Paulie Malignaggi's bare-knuckle defeat shows why it's high time we end the boxing versus MMA debate

Published time: 23 Jun, 2019 10:19Edited time: 23 Jun, 2019 16:04

Paulie Malignaggi carried a lifetime of boxing experience into the BKFC ring on Saturday night when he took on former UFC fighter Artem Lobov, but another thing he brought with him ultimately proved his downfall - his arrogance.

Malignaggi believed his extensive experience and skills in the "sweet science" would be enough to claim an easy win. But even though he was competing in a sport with the word "boxing" in the name, he was out of his comfort zone and competing in a completely different sport.

His disrespect for Lobov heading into the contest was embarrassing at times. The bitterness clearly still lingered from THAT Conor McGregor sparring session a couple of years back, and his attitude towards Lobov was at times disgraceful (most notably his press-conference spitting) and reflected badly on both himself and the promotion he'd signed to fight for.

That's not to say the promoters were that upset about it, mind you. Malignaggi's histrionics, spitting or otherwise, helped crank up the tension and undeniably raised interest for the fight. If that was Malignaggi's intention, it was mission accomplished.

But the mission that really counted took place on Saturday night, and there he was ultimately found wanting. A fight he predicted he would win handily proved to be anything but easy as Lobov earned 48-47 scores on all the judges' scorecards.

One thing this fight did demonstrate was the snobbery that still exists between boxing and MMA. Malignaggi ridiculed the MMA fanbase for their "stupidity" ahead of the matchup, mocking them for believing Lobov had any sort of chance in the fight.

Well, they're not looking that stupid now.

Some sections of the boxing fraternity have always looked down their noses at mixed martial arts, and some have mocked MMA fighters for their striking compared to the tighter, at-times more technical traditional boxing style.

Easier to say that in hindsight than before the fight though.
Yeah man, absolutely. I would have no issue with holding my hands up if I called it wrong - and I did given that I thought Paulie would win - I just assumed it would be close and messy.

Posted about it a bit on Sherdog before the fight. Would upload screenshots but can’t really be arsed going through the hassle of uploading them to imgur etc. I was looking forward to this more than Floyd vs Conor given that it never felt like a foregone conclusion for me.

Gotta take into account he damaged his right hand (probably broke it again) in the second round. Would've been a different fight had he not. It's not like he got outclassed he's 38 and fucked up his hand! Not a big deal at the end of the day.

Shut up Bob ..

Is that the whole article? I'd like to see who wrote it. I came across the headline yesterday, but didn't open the link.

Boxing has such a rich history. 38 year old Paulie's performance against an MMA fighter in his physical prime has no bearing on the integrity of the sport. It's ridiculous to make this rivalry between one man and an MMA team more than what it is.

It was a freakshow within a circus..._I enjoyed watching guys like Chris Leben fight, like literally twenty fucking years ago, back around the time Paulie could still clench his fists properly and could move his legs...This proves and settles absolutely nothing, this is a joke, how many more freakshows and riled up casuals must we endure ffs. Lobov is a mediocre MMA fighter and Paul is a retired balding guy who relied on his feet and a good jab who held two titles in boxing and was considered good A DECADE , both from guys who will never be in the history books as anything other than also rans .Second title was against Senchenko(upset win because Paul was considered shot, this was like 8 years ago), whos best victory is a come from behind stoppage against a cokeheaded Hatton who never should have been in there then went on to get KO'd by Kell Brook. His first was the IBF belt against the mighty Lovemore Ndou TWELVE FUCKING YEARS AGO. Oh speaking of Ricky Hatton. Remember when he went into the ring with faster feet and a better jab than Paulie and gave him a boxing lesson? Phil Baroni was on the cover of Ultimate Knockouts 2 because of this: That fight is almost 20 fucking years old and they pitted him against another guy whos prime was when the millenium wasn't a decade old and known for knockouts and big power. What did weget guys?

Paul is worse now than Hatton was when Senchenko decked him with his own patented bodyshot. NOBODY here credits Senchenko with a legit victory over Ricky Hatton because Hatton shouldn't have been in the ring. In their primes, Hatton gave Paul a boxing lesson, and Paul used his good judgement of distance, great footwork(In terms of distance judgement) and constant snappy jab (Prettymuch his whole arsenal for the last decade) along with great self promotion and never shutting the fuck up , picking wise fightsto back into contendership then get beat up again for the big payday against the real contenders. Lobov is a high end journeyman MMA fighter who got a shitload of UFC fights because he was teammates with Danas lover Conor (UFC put on THE REAL FIGHTS) So we got a retired boxer with one handwho was world class but very flawed in his prime, over ten years ago, against an active MMA fighter with a negative record, fighting under a certain set of rules, bareknuckle

So what did we see? Paul Malignaggi actually bust up Lobovs face pretty bad which is funny because people have compared his hands from'featherduster' to 'as brittle as uncooked spaghetti'...And that was in his pr ime., Pauls terrible awkward turns kept making him look hurt when he wasn't, he looked so awkward on his legs it was clear that from the opening bell you should never go near a ring again. Lobov looked like Lobov, throws that back uppercut front hook combo that mcgregor likes to throw(All southpaws do this but its dangerous and Lobov leaves himself open) Lobov was slow , sloppy awkward and it was boring as fuck. He got a razor thin victory in some T-Virus infected version of bare knuckle boxing against a middle aged manwho was a good pro boxer a decade and a half ago, and life goes on.._ Paul did enough to win, but I knew Lobov would get he decision. How does this in any way affect MMA or boxing?

Oh and guys, Paulie already lost to an Irish boxer, in Ireland. In a USA vs Ireland tournament. The guy met Paulie in Vegas took pics with him and guess what, even posted footage of the fight on youtube, Paul remembered him and they had a good talk. And gosh, the footage even shows a teenage Malignaggi shaking the hand of and bowing before his young Irish conqueror. The reason Paulie is 'bitter' about the McGregor sparring shit is because they pulled a complete dirty scummy trick on him and that was just another of many reasons I realised "The Mack' was full of Kack. Lobov actually seems more likeable than McGregor. He's a thundercunt that man,

I respectfully disagree. The more I think about it the more it lies on Paulie and only him. He's 38 and way past his prime. If it was Devon Alexander, Victor Ortiz or someone under 35 then it be totally different. Think about it.

I thought it be closer too, but even before the fight we all knew Paulie was pillow fisted, had bad hands, and was a commentator. I can't remember or name the guy who last beat him in boxing.

Artem is like 13-15 in MMA as someone said, but his record isn't padded like all boxers and his head coach said he would take fights on short notice early in his career. He's also never been TKO'd and that says a lot about the man.
The last guy to beat Paulie in pro boxing had him down for the ten count on a body shotwas this guy recently got beat up and stopped in 3 rounds by to Liam Smith and is basically domestic level
