Well, Beterbiev has certainly earned an easy payday fight, so no complaints from me.

But how exactly is Meng Fanlong the IBF mandatory? Even by WBO standards that would be ridiculous.

Maybe they're just desperate to attract Chinese viewers, given the potential huge market that might eventually mean.

And maybe that's OK with me as well, since I suppose it will help the sport overall.
- Although Meng getting brutally KTFO by Artur may not quite have the effect they're hoping for, on the Chinese market.

Maybe the Chinese promotor will pay Beterbiev an extra few million, to go easy on Meng, coast to a UD, & make it appear as a legitimate fight.

Deadendgeneration,

What's your take on the current pro boxing situation in China?

Is it something the average person on the street is at least aware of? Do they know the names of the top fighters?

Are fights broadcast? PPV or free?

Thanks, I'm sure many members here would love to know about this.

Meng's a decent fighter TBF. He did a proficient job on Frank Buglioni last year. But to echo the general sentiment, he has next to no chance against Beterbiev.

It doesn't seem to be making much headway. A decent number of people know who Zou Shiming is but that's mostly because he did some reality TV show. But even that didn't seem to translate to much interest in his actual boxing. His fights were mostly shown on CCTV5 (national sports channel) and his return bout after the TV show did good numbers, but that seems to be more because of his new celebrity status and plugging into nationalistic sentiment being stoked by the Communist Party. I doubt any of the people I train(ed) with could name Meng and that's among people who actually box. Perhaps if he were to win it'd generate some fanfare, but boxing is so far down the pecking order of sports popularity of both viewership and even more so participation. To put it into perspective, I lived in a city of 15-20m people 2 years ago that didn't have a single specialised boxing gym. 5-10 Muay Thai, 3 or 4 BJJ/MMA but nowhere to box. Where I'm living now is much smaller and has/had a boxing gym but it's been closed since July with no signs that it's going to open again.

Thanks!

Disappointing, but very informative.

I wonder what Top Rank bid, and if they low-balled the fuck out of it like they did with Bey/Shafikov.

I can't find the tweet but if it's held in China, it'll be a political statement on Beterbiev's part because of what's currently being done to the Uighur Muslims.
Totally fucking forgot that Beterbiev is Muslim. Yeah, I can see that 100%!.

Looks like he can continue to throw gays off rooftops so everyone wins except the Chinese.
