Not entirely true. I don't know about other states, but here in CA we have the family medical leave act which guarantees paid maternal leave. It's just not mandated on a federal level.

This is an awesome thread, Haggis.

On a molecular level there ain't much in it when it comes to Northwestern Europe on the whole, we are all incredibly similar genetically and quite easily discerned from other geographic populations with the tools of modern bio-tech, but interestingly despite fam emigrating directly from Germany, I actually cluster with Scandinavia on a more intensive genome-wide SNP analysis. As I've mentioned before, the North Midwest is almost exclusively of those two origins.
