Did Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay) really win this fight?

Olympic final against Zbigniew Pietrzykowski...

The voice over commentator is definitely in the bag for the greatest but I'm not sure....

I was 8 when that fight took place but didn't see it live on TV and had not seen the entire fight until you posted this. I had to turn off the sound as it was so biased in Clay's favor but that didn't change the fact I saw the first 2 rounds for Zigzy with Clay coming on real strong in the last half of the final round to take that one.

Not near as big a "gift" as the one where Roy Jones got robbed, but after watching the video, Clay should have gotten Silver.

Yeah that's how I saw it.

Although I'm not sure how the Olympic scoring system was in 60.

If it was round by round than I'd say Clay lost but if it was cumulative (like total punches vs total punches) maybe a toss up.... :think1

I haven't had a chance to watch the video but did a quick google search. couldn't find much about the scoring except for

"Beginning in 1960, Olympic boxing matches were scored by five judges. Each judge voted for a winner based on his separate scoring of each round. The boxer who prevailed on a majority of the judges' cards, was declared the victor. "
.

That sounds like the point scoring system. If that's the case than Maybe Ali picked up enough in that last round to tip him over the edge.

It was scored 5-0 though for whatever that is worth

Aussie Tony Madigan - who ended up with one of the bronze medals - gave Ali a decent fight in the semi-final too.

Tony Madigan 2nd from the left on the bronze block of dais.

Until looking into the rules for Olympic boxing in the 60's I had no idea about Madigan!

That's probably about the last time Aus has had an olympic medal as well.

No time to watch the whole thing right now, but Zbigniew Pietrzykowski looks awfully good. Decent power, too.

Oddly, he apparently never turned pro.

The only one I can think of since is 'Spike' Cheney in 1988.

Jeff Fenech got robbed blind in 1984.

Poland was basically under Soviet influence...so not much chance to turn pro.

It's a shame we have issues with getting guys like this over to the pros. Plenty of monsters in the amateurs that no one knows about
