Here's a very interesting article by a senior aerodynamicist, remaining anonymous, about the opposing front wing philosophies of Ferrari and Mercedes;

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/47527705
That was a good read. If I remember correctly merc was having trouble with rear tire deg last year so it makes sense for them to concentrate on fixing that. Another interesting thing is that Vettel likes a planted rear so it could be a problem for him later on.

If I understand the article it makes it seem as this guy thinks the Ferrari is closer to maxed out in it's current state.

It's a shame about Williams, such a historical team going round at a snails pace is not good to see. Absolutely buzzing for the opener though. Looks like it's gonna be a close fight with the top 3 and I expect red bull to be much much more competitive this season and have max genuinely fighting for the title.

Yeah that's more or less what I got from it. Merc's front wing allows for greater scope for development (more downforce) but is more difficult to achieve and maintain. This is in line with Adrian Newey's comments at the beginning of testing which stated something to a similar effect.

I wonder, could Adrian be our secret aerodynamicist?

Hes one guy that is so secure in his employment that I could see him writing that.

It may not even show this year as much as next perhaps.

Wow that is huge, .7 to Vettel and a whole second to Leclerc. Was worried this would mean we're back to merc dominance days which I really couldnt be arsed with but its actually nearly exactly the same as australia last year

and Ferrari was quicker in the race iirc lets hope they are again this year, do think theres a clear pattern now of Merc talking themselves down and Ferrari talking themselves up over the last couple of years that the F1 media seems to totally fall for or go along with

Kubica 1.7 of his team mate and 3 seconds off the nearest non williams is rough, watching him this season could be really sad.

Wow, and if Ferrari are almost maxed out, and Mercedes aren't, then this could be a brutal season.

Been reading on reddit and some forums and dont know if people are overreacting but general opinion seems to be this is very significant, last year ferrari knew they were behind and had huge updates for the 2nd race which isnt the case this year also people seem to think Red Bull are going to have equal or better race pace than Ferrari and theyll be taking points off eachother which means the WDC gap could get huge very quickly if this qualifying is at all representative of general form and no some circuit specific anomaly

Praying that merc dont just drive off and spend the race 'managing the gap', going back to 2014-2016 with Bottas instead of Rosberg would be a disaster

Well, I didn't expect that. Baffled by where all that pace came from. One explanation could be the rumour that Ferrari have turned their engine right down for reliability concerns and as a result are running a low downforce set up to make up some straight line speed.

Would explain them losing so much in hard braking zones and mid speed corners.

Fell asleep half way through it wasnt a great race

Didnt see a dominant Bottas win coming, merc are saying Hamiltons floor had damage who knows if its legit as Merc talk shite constantly

Rumours Ferrari had to run their engine in safety mode....not sure I buy it as Vettel seemed confused by their lack of pace and theres no way the Haas or Alfas were in safety mode with the same engine but also not sure how they could be THAT far off with no issues, basically a second a lap down on Bottas.

Perhaps a bit boring but im encouraged by the cars ability to run close lap after lap. Albert park is a very difficult place to get a move done.

Somehow f1 needs to make for a viable 2 stop strategy however, with everyone just running a one stop this is what you get. No one is there to potentially shake anything up.

I wouldnt mess with the tires so that means maybe trying refueling. With reasonably durable tires running a lighter load on hot tires brings the over cut into play perhaps.

Just looking at the practice times and.....I dunno lol. What are red bull doing in 8th and 12th? hopefully theyre that confident they werent pushing but I doubt it

At least it looks like Merc dont have a huge lead, yeah theyll turn it up in Q3 but cant see them being .7 ahead again.
