Is the race at 6am too?

Red Bull fucking it up and not doing a second run yet being that close to Ferrari in qualifying is good news for the race, would not be at all surprised if Verstappen gets past both of them onto the podium. Hopefully its like last year where Ferrari can be stronger in the race than in qualifying but I read mercs race pace has looked better all weekend so doubt it.

Grid was very mixed up first 2 races but here its 2 mercs, 2 ferraris, 2 red bulls, 2 renaults, 2 haas which is interesting

It's incredibly close. Ferrari was three tenths off I think. Merc isnt dominant by any means here.

Then how close they all were to their teammates, crazy. How far off Ferrari was max? Wasnt it like .2? Anyway hes in shouting distance and still destroying gasley who was nearly a second off max

Well I wish Id stayed in bed, that merc double stacked pitstop was the most interesting thing thats happened in ages

Ferrari are going to have to either get both drivers on board with quick team orders or not get involved and just let them race, Vettel was faster but spent too many laps behind Leclerc wasting his tires and then they ended up sacrificing Leclerc to verstappen

Gasly and Ricciardo should pit for the bonus point theyve both got big enough gaps

I cant believe how dumb Ferrari have been, why did they pit Leclerc with the plan of "he just needs to catch verstappen at over a second a lap and overtake him" instead of just leaving him out to defend

I'd feel pretty hard done by if I was Leclerc atm.

This season could be decided by reliability between the Mercs, like 2016. 1 DNF and you're massively on the back foot.

Agree Leclerc got completely screwed today, not just the let Vettel past thing (which I dont hate the idea of but it was obviously too late when they did it in terms of fighting the mercs anyway) the strategy from that point on was just bollocks again I dont know what the computer simulations were telling them but common sense could see that last pit stop was not going to work, once theyd put themselves in that mess their only choice was to hold out there was just no chance of them catching and passing Verstappen of all people that quickly and easily.

Already its very hard to see a non merc winning especially considering theyre more reliable for in season development than Ferrari (as well as actual reliability) where hopefully at least it should be different to 2014-2016 is that its at least competitive and if a merc driver has a bad race that might mean coming 5th or 6th rather than 2nd so hopefully that can make it more about the drivers and less about reliability/starts/luck etc which favours Hamilton strongly, itd take a lot of weird stuff to happen even more than 2016 for Bottas to win I think.

Looking at the odds bookies dont seem to agree Hamiltons evens for WDC and Merc are 1/2 for constructors which look amazing bets to me so who really knows.

Ferrari just cant execute for shit. How often do they have to Jack up strategy before they really shake things up. They never had the pace to take it to the mercs but there is no excuse for them not to finish 3-4.

They could have a slightly better car than merc and would still likely lose. If it isnt strategy it's on track errors and if it isnt that its reliability.

So I've been watching that Netflix Doco series Drive To Survive about the F1.
Geez it's getting me keen to get more into the sport! All the stuff that goes on in the background is super interesting!!

It was shitting me that Red Bull were putting so much on that brat Verstappen rather than properly supporting the consistent Ricciardo.

Also how much of this all comes down to the driver to win?
Obviously they have to be able to drive good but if you put Hamilton or Vettell in that piss poor Williams car would they even be competitive? Put that billionaires boy in the Merc and would he be getting podiums consistantly?

No doubt all the drivers have an ass load of skill at handling the cars but it just seems like whoever spends the most gets the most wins. Pay to play.

That Williams is so bad its pretty much beyond the driver, I think Hamilton might be able to pull off a couple 9th-10th finishes on certain tracks in certain conditions but thats about it, and thats because Hamilton is fucking brilliant. If you put Hamilton in a back of the grid car that wasnt as far off as the williams like the torro rosso he could drag it way up in the standings and beat a lot of drivers in better cars though like Alonso did last year in that shitty Mclaren.

Stroll in a merc would likely finish 5th or 6th in the championship Id guess, hes not good but hes not totally useless he could win a race or 2 if things went his way, and even if he was a second a lap off his team mate he's still going to beat all the non Red Bull/Ferraris/Mercs in most races.

Thats what Id guess anyway, the car is obviously the most important thing but if you look at the difference between Hamilton and Bottas last season or Alonso and any of his team mates last 7-8 years of his career the drivers still can make a huge difference.

Apologies if already posted, but:

Just by looking at the flag and year I can tell you exactly who won that year. I don't actually need the flags. As a child I probably could of told you the number of races that driver win that year and their age too.

It's an illness.

Anyway. Having watched the documentary on Netflix my passion for the sport has been re-ignited. I'm pumped for Baku now.

Anyone see the documentary? It's exactly what f1 has been missing the past few years, personality. It's great to get a real feel for the thoughts, emotions and viewpoints of drivers, team bosses and mechanics.

It has also deepened my dislike for Verstappen. It reinforced my existing feeling towards him. An entitled, petulant , immature driver who happens to be quick. Ocon should of knocked the head off him last year when he started the pushing and shoving.

Grosjean is a suicide job waiting to happen. He tries so hard and shit constantly goes wrong, he clearly has mental frailties which go way beyond F1 imo. I hope he has a good year.

Magnussen is hilarious. Like a more charismatic Kim Raikkonen.

Ricciardo is the man. Seems a great guy and great driver.

Ocon is a talent, I want him racing next year and hope it's at Mercedes and he stuffs Verstappen in the championship.

The entire force India team have gone from a team I used to like, to a team I can't stand. Perez and Stroll as your drivers with their bags of cash, fuck me.. Perez is decent, but there are 12 drivers I'd rather have in the car over him. Stroll is obviously decent, but he's barely F1 level. He's not a top 20 driver in the world, no way.

I'm yet to watch it but really need to get on to it, maybe this weekend when the wife is away. My thoughts exactly on max. Although I do like his battles with vettel because it usually ends hilariously with vettel facing the wrong way or minus a front wing or tyre! Part of me would like vettel to stay on long enough for when the red bull and max are competing for a title just to get his own back and give him a few shunts.

The petulant way he seemingly conducts himself around the paddock it is a surprise he doesn't have more 'enemies' as such out on track.

I also don't think it's a foregone conclusion that max will be this ultra successful multi championship winning driver with all of the young talent coming through. Many of them seemingly have a wise head on their shoulders and max has multiple years behind the wheel but is still playing catch-up in that area.

Agreed.

I'd have Ocon ahead of him. I'd have Magnussen ahead of him. I'd have Le Clerc and probably Gasly. Especially considering the salary.

F1 is about the car more so than the driver. There are other racing series that are more driver centric but they all come down to the team behind the driver first and foremost.

I really enjoy the technical side of the sport. I dont have any engineering background but it's still interesting to me.

Time will tell I suppose but for one gasley has looked pretty bad thos year. Max is killing him. I'm a k mag fan but I dont think hes on that level. Solid driver, belongs in f1 but i dont see champion material there. The other two guys may be better, hard to tell. Leclerc is a real talent for sure and I do think ocon is capable of reaching those heights as well
