Thoughts on the 5 second penalty for Vettel? Unfair or justified? It has split ex drivers and pundts, but it was consistent with the penalty Verstappen got last year for something almost identical, not that that makes it the right choice. I don't know enough about the intricacies of the sport to have a strong opinion.
Hence the single paragraph :smoke

In a deplorable basket
One thing that did occur to me about Vettel's penalty but I haven't heard mentioned is that it might be deemed he left the track and gained an advantage by rejoining the way he did. It isn't what the stewards passed judgement on, it was an unsafe rejoin, I believe, but technically he took an off track route and blocked an opponent from gaining a place he should have been able to claim in the process.

I haven't read anything about it since the post-race interviews but wonder if, when they looked at the telemetry, the stewards didn't think he lifted enough when he realised he'd overcooked the corner thereby guaranteeing he'd not be able keep to the inside because he was carrying too much speed.

Could well have been that. If he deliberately kept the boot in, then maybe that's their reasoning for the penalty.

Could you even do that in the grass? He would have lost it when he came back on if he was still on the throttle. To me that whole thing is the very definition of racing incident.

Quite honestly Hamilton was lucky. I never criticize a driver for split second decisions when an incident happens right in front of them but the gap he chose could have easily taken them both out of the race. If he hangs back he drives up the inside and passes with ease.

Hamilton followed the racing line and vettel cut him up I see no fault for Hamilton. He's entitled to stay on his racing line and not expect to be pushed to the wall. Fwiw I agree with the penalty.

Dont mistake my point for indicating fault. Hamilton had none in the incident.

I saw it as a racing incident, vettle didnt intentionally squeeze him, he was trying to regain control

Might actually have a decent race tomorrow with that grid, would love to see any combination of Leclerc Hamilton and Verstappen battling on track

I really hope Bottas is replaced next year, hes probably the most boring driver to pair with Hamilton in a dominant car

Bottas is like Rosberg 2.0. Problem is, nobody can match Hamilton like for like. They are good drivers, but they are made look ordinary beside Hamilton.

Rosberg made it more entertaining though and would try desperate things to try and beat him and you had all the off track rivalry whereas Bottas is a decent driver but provides zero entertainment on or off track.

Shockingly an actual good race today

Great race today.

Pass from Verstappen was perfectly fine imo. Leclerc was a little too weak imo. He left a massive gap on the entry to the corner and then wasn't strong enough to leave his car on the exit. I'd rather crash out holding position and take the other guy with me, than just allow yourself to be bumped like that.

He should of kept his car in the middle of the track on entry

That was brilliant and F1 desperately needed a really good race

I dont know how I feel about that at the end, because theres 2 common things with moves like that which contradict eachother with the "you have to leave room" and "the car ahead on the inside has won the corner and leclerc has to back out" which brundle and hill were saying, it was very aggressive and if its not a penalty it was right on the edge of being a penalty. I think Vettels penalty in canada and the reaction might make them less likely to give it today.

Anyway whatever the stewards decide Max was fucking incredible, was behind his team mate on lap 2 and ended up lapping him ffs, since midway through last season he has been driving at an unbelievable level. Leclerc is the real deal too hope we get 10 years of them racing eachother at the front.

Gasly is fucking gash I'm confident I could do what he does in an F1 car.

It's a move that wouldnt have happened 30 years ago. There wouldnt have been the miles of runoff and the cars were still dangerous enough that drivers weren't that aggressive. What max did is pretty common in modern f1. If anything he turned in maybe a meter late.

I dont really like it but I get it. I'd rather see the wheel to wheel fight cary on to turn 3 like it did on the previous lap. It's easier to get the power down on the outside of that corner than it is off the apex, at least it's that way in every game I played, it showed on the previous lap to be the case as well. Max knew that and took his lunge when he had the opportunity.

Quite honestly that was shit driving on leclerec's part, why he gave max the line in the first place is beyond me. Maybe they have a history of racing nice together but this is f1.

Oh and ferrari is a freaking joke. Have they had an error free race all season?

Someone able to give me a quick run down on the DRS rules.

I get how it works but what’s the score on when it can be used and what not?

I was watching the highlights below and it seems when Verstappen was chasing down Lerclerc he had DRS wide open and gunning it but Leclerc had his closed. Could Leclerc not have opened his as well. The ferraris are the fastest in straights yeh? Seems like a no brainer. Unless of course rules said he can’t open.

Worth watching this...bearing in mind that Hammond is a pretty good fucking driver and hugely experienced at driving fast cars about etc.

Yeah I seen that a few years back, they don't give him the full race spec setup but he still does very well. That was also back before full slick tyres, the grip on full slicks in warm weather would be so much better.

Not even joking, of all the sports in the world where I think I could get close to doing what the likes of Gasly or Stroll do, it's formula 1 /motor racing..I did a track day in a formula ford car and by the end of my session I was getting close (like 2-3 seconds) to the instructors best times, and about 5 seconds quicker than anyone else in our group that day. Any other sport I watch I understand I wouldn't get near a pro level, but motor racing I'm sure I could give a good account of myself.

Fair enough mate, to me that Hammond video made me realise how much harder the sport was than I even thought. But if you're doing that on formula fords then you've obviously got a knack for it. It would be cool to try and see if you could get a chance to take a car around a lap somewhere, but I guess if it's possible, it's phenomenally expensive.

You can rent out F1 cars in dubai as a track day experience. Crazy expensive though.

The video of Hammond just illustrates how Hammond knows little about racing or cornering at speed in any car, let alone an F1 car. He was at times on both the brakes and the accelerator, you wouldn't do that in a go kart without spinning let alone a race car. His half second between jumping from accelerator to brakes is massive too. Why idle for a half a second, what could that possibly be doing for you?

I will say that the apprehension of wrecking an F1 car trying to get up to speed and trying to get the brakes and tyres warmed would be a bit nerve wracking. But that philosophy still applies in lower cars and karts, you just don't usually care about spinning or stuffing a less expensive machine though.

Only the following car can use it when the gap is less than one second at a given detection point before the actual drs zone. Austria has 3 drs zones. Lap traffic counts as well
