Vietnam has its plus points for locals. There is a progressive tax system which provides healthcare to everyone...it's not the best, but it's okay. Ironically, there is fuck all protection from hugely rich bosses just firing you, and money talks so it's corrupt as fuck. There's also a huge gap between the rich and the poor that makes ours look tiny.

But the average person who is not poor has an okay life from what I can tell and from Vietnamese people I got to know. Even those on shitty money in Hanoi have enough to go out for beers with mates, and have a laugh, they just can't afford to travel or buy much in the way of material things. But my Vietnamese staff who were paid horribly (not by me I should add) all had their own mopeds and went to get their nails done etc...young women without much money, but living quite like young women in the UK or US bar the fact they worked far more hours and drank less alcohol.

Fair point I suppose.

The issue I have with communism, well one of them is the one party system. A cunt manages to get in power and you aren't getting him or her out.

Gotta go back to work now, freedom eh?
Well yeah, no one is saying it's a good system mate.

It's clearly undesirable if you value freedom.

Yep.

It's still a communist country by rule though which shows how much more scope there is to live freely and without violent prejudice if you get the right kind of Governnace which was my original point.

Genocide not being a core part of the ideology helps with that
Aye, but I would say it is simply not communist. It's capitalist with left wing taxation, massive corruption around bribes etc and it's just housed under the name communism. The only communist element really left is that it is a one party system that suppresses freedom of press.

I'm gonna get in trouble at work if I carry on but...
Its basically a mix of socialism and capitalism, in simplistic terms?

Which is what many people her would like to a degree in their own countries?

I think and I maybe wrong that @JamieC is an advocate of Communism.

I guess I can see how communism can be a good idea in theory. Communities working for the greater good of one another but the reality is no one wants all of their personally owned shit taken from them and given to the government for them to control. It will never happen, I wouldn't stand for it, and neither would most anyone else.

Most people are pretty centrist when it comes to politics I think, sure we've got differing views about some things. I think we place importance and significance on different things but most people want their families to be okay. They don't want to lose what they have, and also don't want people dying in the streets. Sure that's pretty broad but I'm a hippy man, I try to look for the good in people.

Except Trump, fuck that guy.

It may not be a core part of the ideology but genocide seems to inevitably happen in "communist" regimes anyway

and I would argue there really are no "pure" communist countries left, certainly not vietnam, china or north korea. Those countries are communist in name only imo

Sure it's a good idea in theory if you don't believe in private property. Marx didn't understand that competition is inherent in human nature.

Communism works great...... as soon as you manage to stop people from ever being greedy, selfish or competitive. Once you clear that tiny, insignificant barrier, it works brilliantly.

Basically this, which is part of human nature, so it'll never happen. Which is why I said it's a great idea in theory. Terrible in practice. I'm a pretty liberal guy and I don't wanna give up all my shit. Those turntables, mixers, speakers, and records are mine god damn it.

I pretty much agree with everything you've said.

People are individuals and value their own uniqueness very highly which is something communism would take from you. It also never seems to end up being for the good of the community either it usually turns into being for the good of the government and the people in government,

The fact there's no pure communism left isn't an accident either, it's natural evolution of a system that adjusts to stuff like consumerism. If a core part of communism was eradicating a particular race of people, it wouldn't exist in any capacity.

Eventually it turns into something else and stops becoming communism by written definition. From what we can tell, Nazism doesn't, as it's too closely aligned with genocide.

Agree with pretty much everything you are saying though, including the inevitability of violence.

Its basically a mix of socialism and capitalism, in simplistic terms?

Erm...not really. I mean it is capitalist in many ways and has invited in big corporations, but it's not comparable to what people are saying they want here, because it's a one party state that suppresses the media, and it is riddled with bribery at every level. And it is open corruption that everyone just accepts, it is actually funny at times.

For example, you are not allowed to work there without a work permit, but you cannot get your work permit until you have passed a medical, got a Vietnamese address and have a company sponsoring you. So...you come in with your letter of employment, start working, and then you go through the process of having various documents stamped etc to get your permit. So EVERY foreigner working there works illegally to begin with, because the government is a fucking cluster fuck and has made it that way.

This means that when government officials come to inspect where we worked, we had to take down all timetables with the names of staff who were yet to have work permits, and if you were a non permitted worker you had to come in late or hide in an unused classroom. But to make sure nobody gets caught and no company suffers, immigration inspectors call ahead by several hours or a day to tell companies they are coming and give them time to fake it all.

Likewise, we used to go to a bar that only had a permit for a small bit of pavement outside the front, but always set up tables and chairs across the street by the lake. It was technically illegal, but nobody owned that bit of land and it was only about 15ft from the bar entrance. So, about once per week the police would drive down the street to inspect any illegal sales, and when they were literally 30 ft from this bar, they would stop the car and through a megaphone announce they were coming to inspect soon. They could fucking see the tables and chairs from where they sat, but technically they were not at that bar yet.

So the owners run out tell everyone to move, we all help move the tables and chairs away from the lake and back to the bar. The police watch to make sure every chair is gone, and then they drive past slowly...look carefully at the side of the lake and the bar, nod and announce "It's good" and drive off. We wait 5 minutes, and then all the tables and chairs get put back out again until next week.

I did bring up the one state thing before, but yeah definitely not something most people would want.

As far as corruption is concerned it seems to be a part of every part of politics everywhere, obviously not on such a comical level.

Is it wrong I read the rest of your post with the Benny Hill music in my head? Thats just outrageous

 Mate that is what it is like. Fucking insane. So, so pointless, and it is not solving anything, stopping anything or achieving anything. It's bizarre.

My missus got to walk one day, and a Vietnamese member of staff ran up and said "I'm sorry, I forgot to call you about the inspection". She didn't have her work permit yet and the inspectors were due in 10 minutes. So they got my missus to hide in a stock room where all the paper and stuff was kept. She was due to teach a class she hated, so it was sweet. She sat in the stock cupboard on her phone for 30 mins while a Vietnamese member of staff gave the kids colouring in or some shit and the inspectors came and checked all the working teachers had permits. They didn't check the stock cupboard of course. They probably saw her go in.

What in the hell? I thought people were joking when they brought things up like this, Ive heard similarly laughable examples of incompetence from my mate who works in Russia but nowhere near that level.

I cant believe she got locked in a cupboard like that  Would it not be easier to just change the law when you think of how many man hours are wasted on stupid shit like that?
