Same. I left TFA feeling pretty pleased, then gradually upon reflection thought less of it, but was still hyped for TLJ. Then Rogue One came out and I went in without big expectations and thought it was fucking brilliant, and I've watched it again at least twice and not stopped liking it.

Then I went to see TLJ hyped to fuck, and left in absolute disgust.
Exactly my feeling too, I totally skipped solo when it came, haven't even bothered to watch it for free so to speak.

Solo isn't a bad movie. It isn't great, but it was a welcome relief. Emilia Clarke is not the best actress, but the rest of the film is pretty good. They have a feminist android which takes some getting used to and due to the mess they made in production it has several mishaps along the way but it is worth a one off viewing. The rest of the cast are pretty good, Woody Harrelson plays a Woody Harrelson character, Donald Glover is cool and the kid playing Solo does a good job. It is a one off story too which is something I'd be interested in seeing if Disney keep on making these films.

Star Wars main films wont get great literature or strong director driven films anymore. It's a disney driven vision now which is a product to focus on commercialization and branding. the production is watered down by immense layers of focus groups, marketers, distribution, demographics, appealing to the widest audience possible to get the biggest return on investment. It's too big for its own good.

Ironically it might have been the original star wars films that probably that fucked a lot of Hollywood filmmaking this way. I am pretty much stuck into watching Indy films these days or going through history watching all the great films of the past. Foreign films are also good.

No wonder Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola denigrate these types of franchises now. Great directors struggle to get finance for their projects. The cinema experience now is either a shit Adam Sandler type comedy or comic book franchises. Most other films hardly get a look in....
The same summer....

Star Wars the first massive blockbuster vs Sorcerer the last of the great New Hollywood films (and seriously underrated until recently).

Yeah, me neither.
Solo was pretty good actually. How does that saying go? It was the movie nobody wanted, the movie nobody asked for.

But it's pretty good. I had zero expectations for it but I found it an enjoyable yarn

Not only is there zero chance of me paying to go and watch this, I am bordering on feeling I shouldn't bother watching it on download either. I'm now at the point where I'd prefer to just pretend these sequels never happened, and consider Star Wars to the original 3 films and Rogue One. I will watch The Mandalorian though.

Not sure if you are a Bill Burr fan, but he's a bounty hunter in The Mandalorian. You can catch a glimpse of him in the trailer.
