Doesn't seem to be a thread for people to discuss the goings on in the gym (apologies if I missed it)

Maybe it's just that I'm new and enthusiastic to the boxing scene but I like to be able to discuss my hits and misses on my journey to being the next Frank Bruno.

So I started doing light sparring today, coach was all "relax don't worry if you hit me" and I'm still pulling my punches thinking if i land I'll one bomb him (I'm prob a cruiser and he's a mw). So he takes his pads off, puts his gloves on and says "jab me in the face"

Tell ya what ive never felt so foolish in all my life, I'm there on the front foot trying to jab his head off and he's ducking by inches every single time. In the first round i landed one shot so he put the head gear on. In round 2 i landed 3 times. If he was throwing back I'd have been sparked for real.

I think i now know what Ali v Bruno would have looked like

This calls for some cliff notes.

1) Guy shows off in the gym a lot, showboating in sparring
2) I dropped him and jumped up onto the corner as if I'd won a title fight
3) The ring in our gym wasn't as well built as one in the pro circuit would be and I nearly fell.

Good times!

What's the kinda timescale from joining the gym to having amatuer fights? I'm nowhere near yet but just thinking of a target to aim for.

You only just started boxing now luf? Makes me feel bad man, I'm only 18 and keep hiding behind the excuse that boxing's past me now

:good

cheers pal
no worries, good luck man you wont regret it, what i will say though is prepare for 4 rounds of 3 minutes of hard action in sparring, as the intensity of a fight is much harder than sparring, so when you go to fight in 3x2s you'll know you have it in the bank

yeah I'm at the stage where I can work the heavybag for a full round at a time no problem so I reckon your timescale should be alright.

Visited a new gym today and sparred a guy who's main goal was to fuck my body up. My dumbass chose to stay in the pocket and absorb his hooks as I didn't think he could hurt me. It went well for two rounds, but by the third, enough punishment had already accumulated that I had to take a knee :patsch
It's been too long since I've taken this much damange. My shoulders, forearms and right side of my body feel like silly puddy.

** thought I'd post this here too

i've not done any heavy sparring yet but that sounds brutal mate.

most of my time in the gym is circuit work, do only 20 minutes or so technical a session.

Had a new guy join our session, about 23 and built like a brick shit house. I'm 20 but look younger, and pretty small. When it came time to pair up, he grabbed me. We did pad work, where I held back just loosening up, and then we did a drill where you would stand in the corner, your partner would trap you and attempt to throw at your body. So he takes his turn, and I cover up, no problem. Then he goes into the corner, and I throw lightly, sometimes giving him shots to defend, and occasionally slipping a soft one in to his ribs or stomach. I give him three or four to deflect and he starts screaming " YEAH I CAN DO THIS, COME ON GIVE IT TO ME!" So I throw properly to his rib cage and drop him there and then  He's actually a really nice guy...

was shadow boxing on tuesday, me and 5 other guys circling around the ring working on combinations and footwork.

about 3 rounds in my knee popped, was hanging, only had to sit out for 5 minutes but the pain was agony. first time my knee has gone in boxing but i'm quite gutted cos the whole reason i took up the sport is that i couldn't play football any more.

First proper sparring session today, got clocked with a peach of a jab but i landed a good 1-2. clearly lost the round though, everything is much more intense when having punches thrown at you, but to balance that the adrenaline is pumping... not experienced out like it bbefore
