Have you ever felt your life was in danger

OK, so another random thread.

Has anyone on here ever felt their life was in danger, for any reason. Could be violence, a car crash, serving in the forces, illness, whatever.

I don't think I have.

I witnessed quite a lot of violence in my teenage years. Saw some folk stabbed, slashed, kicked unconscious. Had blades pulled on me a few times as well, had to run from a few dodgy situations.

But I was never really that scared. Probably just the confidence of youth.

The three times I have been most scared in order:

1. When I was about 15, I was chased by a group of boys from another part of town after going to an under 18's nightclub. If I was caught I would have been in big trouble, but I was always really fit, and did football, boxing, and athletics back then.

2. Was in a scooter crash when I was 16. On the back of an older mate's scooter. Back wheel went on some gravel and we both came off the bike.

I was fine, but he had some bad cuts and a concussion. Bike was a write off too. We could easily have been hit by other traffic, but both went to the side of the road.

I've never been on a scooter or motorbike since.

3. Was in a plane once and had a bad landing. Went right off the runway and into the dirt. Kept skidding along for ages. Everyone on the flight crapped it.

Anyone else?

Yeah, during the earthquake I was close to getting squashed by a 4 storey building. Bricks and masonry rained down on the pavement about 20 metres away from me. I'd just walked past it on my way to the bakery for lunch. Never got my fried chicken.

Looked similar to this, maybe a bit more rubble. I was about as far away as the orange vests, give or take a few feet, when it collapsed.

Also nearly got annihilated by some dopey bitch jumping off a cliff into the water when I had done it a few seconds earlier and only just surfaced for air, without any time to swim away. She rocketed into the water about three or four feet away from me. Don't know if she would have killed me, but she would have fucked me up for sure. Doom Creek, the place was named. This is it:

And got hit by a car one time coming home from school, went onto the roof and then off the back of it. Thought I broke my back, but just jarred the fuck out of my tailbone.

Scary stuff.

I've never had any natural disaster experience. Thankfully.

I had a similar experience to you with the girl jumping on you that I had forgot about.

Girl jumped on my head in an aqua park in Spain when I was about 18/19 during the wave machine.

Every time I surfaced the waves came up. I was a decent swimmer, but I panicked, and it took me a bit to calm down and get my breathing sorted.

Imagine drowning as an adult in an aqua park. I'd have been mortified.

A few times while working as a professional firefighter for over 20 years. Comes with the job at times.

Also had a few close calls while enjoying riding my motorcycle. Those pop up so quick you only hope to have time to react, and react properly------so far, so good.

nearly fell off a roof, that wouldn't have ended well. luckily my friend grabbed my leg and i was left at a 45 degree angle with my hands against the gutter staring down about a 4 story drop.

Round and about
On a small boat island hopping around Greece or Turkey back in the 80's. The weather had turned a bit nasty and the thing was unsafe. We were getting tossed about like a cork, sitting on what was basically a park bench on deck, and every time a wave hit us the whole bloody bench went about a foot up in the air. It didn't help that the skipper was arseholed on the local poison and seemed to find the whole thing an absolute wheeze. I've never been so scared in my life and was convinced we were going to end up as fish food.

Was in a pretty bad car accident when I was around 20.

Lived at home commuted to my local college.

Had a bad snow storm but decided to drive to the gym.

Long story short was going to fast...realized I was going to fast (I tended to speed a lot). Touched the breaks knowing I was going to fast and knowing it might go bad and it did.

Went right off the road at 60 mph into a tree. Wasn't even wearing my seat belt.

I remember I gripped the steering wheel as hard as I could to try to hold myself but it was no use obviously.

Luckily the car had air bags.

Destroyed my glasses but was otherwise fine other than my triceps from trying to push against the momentum being in pain and my neck and traps.

I was working out heavy back than though so I think it helped.

It all happened so fast that I didn't really have time to be scared per say.

Definitely changed my driving habits though.

Especially in winter weather...in fact truth be told I still get a bit uncomfortable driving in bad weather and probably go slower than I need to.

Crashed on the "mountain" at Cadwell Park, as you reach the top of the hill the bike briefly lifts of the ground but I landed all skewed and as the rear tyre gripped I lost control and the bike flung me off and into a fence, that was the first proper crash I'd had and I actually had a "oh fuck" moment in mid-air and as I landed I broke 4 ribs and my collarbone as well as knocked myself out. Was back on track 3 weeks later, but that moment in mid-air was surreal, you ever have one of those moments in your dreams where you can jump ridiculously far? That's what it felt like.

Passenger in a car that fell in a canal river on December 22nd with water almost frozen. Electric windows shut down when the engine touches the water. Climb on roof of the car, jump in the freezing water with winter clothes on. Swim with 1 arm for about 50 ft dragging my gf with my other arm because she can't swim because of the cold water and the weight of the clothes. Reach the side of the canal and there is a cement wall about 15ft high so can't get out. Luckily a car stopped and the guy had a rope in his trunk so he pulled my gf out of the water and then me.

Fuck, that's a night out for sure.

Anyone else in the car? How did they go? How did your girlfriend's attitude towards you change after that?

Gun pulled on me by some meth head bikers during a fight. Wasn't scared at the time, looking back holy shit.

Driving through Medicine bow national forest, hit a patch of gravel, spun around 3 times and almost went into the divider wall.

Almost drowned in a pond in Brandon, England where my dad was stationed. One of my first memories as a child. In fact it's seared into my brain. Slipped on a rock and fell in, dad had to jump in and get me.

2 times, first I was a lot more scared than the second

I'd been out round town with my mates, it was about 3.30am and we were at a pizza shop, when leaving a car pulled up beside us and ask if there's anywhere they could get drink at this time. I said There's a chinese not too far and gave directions, the guy says he's not from the area could we show him and he'd drop us back, his mate is in the back and his gf in the front, after some convincing me and my mate got in and headed for the Chinese... It was shut. My mate says he has some beers and his house they can buy, asks them to pull up at the bottom of his road, his parents were in bed and we asked the guys to wait and we'd be back, anyway we are in his kitchen, turn round and one of the guys is stood in his kitchen which was creepy as fuck, anyway we get back in the car and there's a big argument about the price of the drink but it eventually gets sorted and off we go to meet out mates again, pull up to the pizza shop and they've gone, so we call them up and they're about a five mins walk away, the guy says get in and he will drop us, just as I'm getting in I see him putting what look like surgical gloves on so I hopped straight back out and was like what the fuck, my mate is still in the car and the guy says he uses them for driving, by this point I'm walking off and they are curb crawling me, eventually I get in and off we go... So I'm giving directions and say left at the roundabout, he goes straight over the roundabout, hits the child lock so the doors are locked, starts screaming about his shovels and crystals in the back of his car and how they're going to Bury us, I was shitting myself thinking who to call with my last 10p credit, I can see shovels In the back and we are now flying as fast as the car could go, I'm scared still thinking this is a wild up till his girlfriend in the front starts crying and saying we are too young to be killed, she's literally begging him not to kill us, my window is half open and I'm considering trying to get out of it going 60mph, eventually he pulls up explains we are lucky his gf is there and lets us go, but it was terrifying at the time.

No one else in the car, got a big toast at Christmas in her family as they saw me as a savior.
This is where it happened. We went through the fence and jumped in the water, you can see part of the cement wall on the other side. There was the same on the side we fell. There was only a chain link fence back then and the wall was following the whole canal. When the wife of a politician fell at the same place a couple of years later and died, they added security. That was over 20 years ago. Girlfriend is the mother of my kids.

Yeah. There was that one time I ran full tilt into a wall of text and I thought it was going to kill me. CPR was badly needed.

Is that where you left people laying around half dead instead of helping them?
