How much of Hitler's early success was due to the content of what he was saying, and how much was due to his personal magnetism/charisma and his willingness to embrace new means of political communication to the public like radio, aeroplanes etc?

A mix of old and new. New technology broadcasting the centuries old tactic of blaming everything on a minority group.

It should also be remembered that Hitler never won a majority in a free election. He got around 33% in 1932 and went into a coaltion with von Papen. The conservatves believed that once Hitler was in a functioning coalition government he wouldnt know how to act and would be a spent force. How wrong they were.

This is a fascinating thread. :good

Can you give me a brief timeline how he then took control of most of Europe?

Here is Hitler giving a speech at the famous Krupp steel factory (today https://www.thyssenkrupp.com/). More than likely given the time code is that it is for the referendum on re-militarizing the Rhineland ( a huge coal and industry area that had been taken as reperations).

Hitler is saying that if you are ready to work as hard as he has and are reading to stand up for your people as he has stood up for them then vote Ja

When he get's into 'power' as part of a coalition (I didn't know that to be honest).
I'll do it in multiple posts.

So the Weimar republic on paper was quite a good system. If the constitution had been followed then there would have been no Hitler.

The 1932 election was a bit of a dissapointment for the nazis. They were talking as if they were going to make Deutschland great again and only got around 32% of the vote.

Some people said Hindenburg (ex-military hero and president of germany) should just rule by emergency decree. The communists were seen as a huge threat and the economy had slumped after loans from the USA stopped during the great depression. Everybody thought Hitler was full of shit. An Austrian who only reached a low rank in the military and seemed to be obsessed with jews.

He had been in the press a few years back for famously trying a coup against the government in Bavaria. His brownshits were pissed up rednecks from the south he spent most of there time fucking and fighting.

So Hindenburg agrees to a government being formed with Hitler as chancellor (Hindenburg hated the lower class Hitler). Hindenburg is 85 years old and some say a bit senile. His attitude seems to be - fuck it, we've tried everything lets give this loud foreign corporal a go.

Hitler calls for another election as he feels momentum is on his side. He wants a majority in parliament and is running around saying there is a jewish-communist plot (read Cultural Marxism) to destroy Germany and only he can save the country.

In the election campaign later the parliament catches on fire. It will never be entirely clear who was behind the fire. A 24 gets blamed. The kid seems borderline retarded and he gets guillotined the next year.

The Nazis go ape shit - unleashing violence against all political enemies and declaring a national emergency. They arrest around 10,000 communists and suspend habeas corpus, the freedom to expression and assembly. Göring pulls out a law that basically says anything can be done to protect the nation and his police for in Prussia (later to become the Gestapo) have free reign.

All trade unions are dissolved and their leaders sent to concentration camps that are being set up around the country. The Nazi party declares itself the only legal party in Germany due to the national emergency.

As a response the SA (those pissed up rednecks I mentioned before) start to ask for more political power in the Nazi party. Cue Hitler's next move. Hitler sets Himmler and his henchman Heydrich to work - rounding up and executing thousands of his own party. By the end of the year Hitler has removed all political opposition both inside and outside his party.

Nazi tough guys block opposition from entering the next parliamentary meeting and declare an enabling act - basically giving Hitler dictatorial powers. There's only one man left between Hitler and absolute power. Paul von Hindenburg.

The old fucker is on his last legs however and the Nazis know this. They visit him and get him to sign a law saying that when he dies Hitler will combine the positions of chancellor and president into one.

The next day Hindenburg dies. Hitler is proclaimed Führer and Reichskanzler and immediately makes a law that the military must know swear oath to him rather than the constitution. A referendum is put together but the fix is in. 88% of voters say they are ok with Hitler'S actions.

Communism killed 100 million people in the 20th Century - why do you think Lenin and Trotsky (Mao too) are not as vilified as Hitler? with his "paltry" 55 million killed?

Show dem balls bro
I have a question.

How badly did it make Hitler's vagina ache when he saw Max Schmeling get knocked out by Joe Louis in their second fight?

How close were the nazis to obtaining nuclear weapons?
In realistic terms, quite far away. There was of course a lot of theory but the Nazis had killed or deported the most intelligent people in the country i.e. jews, left wing intellectuals. Science had become poltiicized and corruption was wide-spread.

A common philosophy took shape in Nazi Germany - working towards the Führer. This meant that although there were often not direct orders from Hitler you worked according to the culture and emotions he instilled. For example, though there was never any offical order from Hitler for the holocaust the entire nai apparatus worked towards what they believed he wanted and what he called for in his pseeches and table talks i.e. the complete extermination of jewry.
