In their attempts to strike the film down they have only made it more powerful then they could ever have imagined. Its killing it at the box office which will no doubt torment all the begrudgers who can't handle the fact a straight white male lead film is getting so much plaudits.

Read this garbage.

If its an incell movie , wouldn't that make Todd Phillips the biggest incell on earth , since he co-wrote and made the film.
Read the article there. Complete and utter horseshit. I hope Phoenix and co win Oscars for this.

I think the problem is that people reviewing films aren't just judging the acting, the plot, the cinematography etc. any more but instead, they're looking through a lens of what the film represents. Do women get to look strong? Is there a mixed race cast? Is the storyline in line with progressive values? When you look back at some of the best films over the last century, you couldn't imagine a majority of them being made how they were back then, they'd have to have an angle about them that suits the modern status quo.

Unfortunately though, most people just want to watch a film without these things being obvious. I don't think anyone is against equality in cinema but there's still a room for chauvinism, bigotry and exclusivity without it being detrimental, but I think the industries are scared of edginess. You only have to look at the recent Dave Chapelle special to see how far off critics are from the rest of the public, and it's not an issue of comedy, it's in TV shows and films too.

Kate Winslet's character in Extras was satire but it wasn't wrong. Hollywood love a victim story, they love to be seen as defending a cause and promote that above anything else. A shit film about a gay immigrant is going to do better in reviews than a better film that has a neutral story.
I think man it's a case of films being too political with the SJW shit and people looking for things that aren't there. I don't know or really care if the makers of this have some political agenda, I just want to see how the bloke became the Joker.

My mate told me that there is a porno film listed on a marquee in their version of Times Square called "Ace in the Hole"

thats supposedly a nod to Heath Ledgers joker from the Dark Knight where he tells Batman that Harvey Dent is his "ace in the hole"

well played

Yeah I saw it this weekend too - great stuff

Not sure how they did it but they really managed to capture the pre-Giuliani grittiness of a decaying late 70s NYC spot on.

A lot of little details in the times square scenes fer sure
It reminded me of an Abel Ferrera film of he 80's , early 90's. The detail and realism of the world is stunning. Every aspect of film making is impressive in this movie.

King of New York? A lot of that was shot around the 59th street bridge and silvercup studios in Long Island City

geez even in the early 2000s under the 59th street bridge it was the wild west - homeless communities, drug addicts, hookers etc

Now its all luxury apartment buildings

So is this movie any good? I’m on a budget..

Top Gun and Star Wars is my only money movies for me
Very good. I’d go see it in the cinema again before I’d watch another shitty Disney Star Wars movie or Top Gun reboot that’s probably filled with all types of SJW nonsense.

I had no real interest seeing this movie but after reviews from a couple of quality posters I'll try to find some time tomorrow to get to a cinema. Seems like it's got a bit of a taxi driver feel to it.

not even close. . Ledgers Joker was the cop killing money burning anti capitalist.

Then you missed the references.
the charlie chaplan movie "modern times" being watched by the rich people is about a man being crushed by industry who suffers a nervous breakdown in his factory. It was banned by Germany for promoting communism.

The Police car that takes Joker away has a license plate that says "industry first"

The ultimate cause of the rise of Joker is budget cuts to city services.

Thomas Wayne the fascist capitalist is arguably the main villain of the film.

The picket signs "kill the rich", "anti capitalist", "capitalism doesnt wait for you"

Not particularly subtle.

It always cracks me up when rich hollywood film makers make "rich people suck" statements in their films, um..you are the rich people - that one with Chris Evans on the non stop train set in a post apocalyptic future comes to mind...

Yeah plenty in this film, but I think it was more the Director etc making a statement and not the character of the joker who was more into the chaos than taking a moral stand on any one issue

Fuming that my choice is to either watch a crappy stream or wait months until a decent version becomes available online. Not a prayer this gets to Chinese cinemas without massive cuts. Will probably cave and watch someone's snidey camera in the cinema recorded version.

Saw it yesterday, loved it. That's the kind of world I wanted to see Joker in. As good as Ledger's performance was, the way The Dark Knight was shot was far too clean for me to see someone like the Joker in. Batman Begins had a better grittiness and color palette. But this one felt much more like the world Joker would inhabit. And also just reading comments on other places, it's really not apt to compare Heath and Joaquin because Heath's Joker is already established as the Joker, while obviously this one is a character study into becoming the Joker. I'd have no doubts the performances of the 2 would be much different if the roles were reversed and we got a background story into Heath, while Joaquin was already the Joker.
