Just so happened to hit an arm wrap to flower sweep the other day

Nice!

Those sweep principles you talk about are one of the few things that stuck with me instantly and have even let me pull off completely random reversals during scrambles. My favourite way to get the ‘trap and roll’ escape when I’m mounted is to bait them into putting an arm underneath my head, they’ve just removed their best method of basing in that side.

Obviously you've got to learn it before you dismiss it, might work for you, might not. I use it to open up kimuras, but the sweep itself I've never been a fan of.
I’ll have a little play and see how it feels live.

None that really talk about the principles that I think it shows. My feeling is that basically every sweep is the same. Take away one or more of their points of base and move their centre of gravity over that point. The details are just there to make things easier or harder.

I really fucking rate Lachlan Giles. He explains things really well, seems a nice bloke, and also seems very intelligent. Obviously his jiu jitsu’s great as well, which helps.

I've rolled with one of his blue belts before. He spoke very highly of him as well. He had to switch gyms for some reason, moved away or something, and he was absolutely gutted.

Yeah, I bet. Have you watched his matches at ADCC yet?

Tough one tonight, a 4 stripe black belt has just started teaching at this tiny MMA gym near my house so I went along. There were only 4 of us that turned up, including one giant Polish fella who I rolled with twice and who basically mauled me.

I’m about 93kg and I reckon he was 115kg-ish, and he must have got about 4-5 kimuras in the two rounds, he was just grabbing my wrist from standing and slowly clawing his way into a position to finish on the ground. Just so strong.

Some good training last night, 8x3 minute rounds after drilling some armbar stuff. Rolled with a black, a good brown, and a very good purple and got fucked up at will, but held my own against a blue and beat a couple of other white belts.

2nd class last night. Very basic, drilling control of seatbelt position, transition to arm bar etc.. Was good, very enjoyable.

I should prob stop taking the piss and actually sign up as a paying member now.

Also, I wish I was more flexible and smaller. I'm 6 ft 1, and I find it hard to be quick and agile with transitions, I feel slow and awkward.

This sounds really cliche and faggy mate, but there’s literally an advantage and disadvantage to every body type in BJJ, as long as you’re not a blubbery mess or disabled.

Tall, slim guys might move a bit awkwardly through some transitions but they have a huge advantage during guard retention, D’Arces, triangles, etc.

Short, strong guys are hard to take down, and pass guard with heavy pressure.

The more you do, the more you’ll tailor the systems to your body types and preference. At the moment, as a beginner, learning a good overview of the game as a whole is the best way to start. Then, after a few years of learning a bit of everything you can really start to hone your game and develop whatever works best.

You need to see everything just to know how to defend it, you don’t need to use it all.

Been doing bjj twice a week now.

I'm not great at it...I did a bit grappling stuff before and always sucked.

I've gotten better but still suck...

Can never seem to get my hips into and coordinate by body.

Thing is I am pretty strong and can usually avoid take downs....

Every once in awhile I think..."man I wish I could punch these fucking guys"....

Having said that...I am getting better..its a great workout....and all in all I enjoy it.

Dude who is teaching me....he did it for about 10 years...in good shape but smaller...hes a pretty solid 170...I'm around 230 now but would be as solid as him at 195 or so.

When we start from the knees he taps me after some time.

But starting from our feet he struggles to take me down...

And...he came to the boxing gym a few times and sparring him was super easy work....

Dropped him the one time with 16 oz sparring gloves headgear and pulling my punches a lot.

So I'm pretty confident in a real fight....

He can kick good though...but I did sparring with guys being able to kick and I was always able to step in and do damage (obviously not against good competition muay thai guys...but guys as good as him.)

Hes a cool dude though....knows the BJJ basics well enough...and right now he isnt charging me and the place is only 3 miles from my place...so all in all cool.

Decent training tonight. I think I’ve got the mounted triangle as my second ‘go to’ sub from mount now, after an arm triangle and just above an ezekiel. I caught someone again with it tonight and it felt fairly controlled and smooth throughout.

I survived a whole round against a good blue around my weight, and against a ridiculously strong ex-rugby white belt. Chuffed with that.

A giant Polish fella kimura’d the fuck out of me, but my only two taps of the night were against him. Definitely surviving better nowadays and escaping a lot of positions I used to get stuck in.
