Decent training tonight. I think I’ve got the mounted triangle as my second ‘go to’ sub from mount now, after an arm triangle and just above an ezekiel. I caught someone again with it tonight and it felt fairly controlled and smooth throughout.

I survived a whole round against a good blue around my weight, and against a ridiculously strong ex-rugby white belt. Chuffed with that.

A giant Polish fella kimura’d the fuck out of me, but my only two taps of the night were against him. Definitely surviving better nowadays and escaping a lot of positions I used to get stuck in.
Sounds like it's coming along. Getting any better at finding that angle for the kimura?

I’ve still never subbed anyone with a kimura. I’m bad at them all, but most of the time I’m looking for chokes and stuff anyway. I get armbars every now and then but I’m not a massive fan.

Took my nephew down to the gym last night. He's 13, about 5'8" and probably pushing 80kg. He's an extremely typical 13 year old, plays fortnite and cod and worries more about how cool he is with his mates at school than anything else. AD(H)D, undiagnosed, etc. etc. etc.

He did really well. He had a great time, didn't complain about drills, he was shitting himself for most of it, especially because I told some of the blue belts my nephew was talking shit about them, told them he said they all look like weak old cunts and that he'd probably smash them. He started freaking out when he saw the muscles on one dude getting changed into his gi. He asks me why I was talking all that shit, they were going to smash him now. I said... yeah...

I showed him a few positions and a few principles, elbows tight, posture, base. One of the other guys showed him a knee slice guard pass, then one of the others showed him an arm bar and an Americana from mount. Then we rolled a bunch of rounds. He was absolutely loving it. Hopefully he catches a bit of a bug and ends up trying out a gym in Melbourne. It'd be the best thing in the world for him.

He did so well I'm going to give him a cobra kai patch today, he's gonna love it.

Trained yesterday

Got there late (I always do...for everything...deficit of mine)
So I jumped in without proper warming up and stretching.

I think I paid the price as I tinged my knee just a bit.

I feel it today. Doesn't really hurt exactly ...

I just "feel it"

Need to warm up better (and get there on time ) in the future.

We do kick boxing class after (more cardio based)

I cant kick worth a shit either....

But I can take heart in the fact that I can punch harder and faster than anyone.

Oh I did get a submission yesterday.

But it was against another guy with even less experience than i... who is probably 175 tops.

Wasnt even a real submission...

I got side control...was trying for a kamura (spelling?)... couldn't get it...but in the process kinda put my shoulder into his face/nose/mouth area so he couldn't breathe and tapped.

Lol

Such garbage ...

That’s quality, mate. I hope he sticks with it.

My son’s 8 in Jan and at the moment he’s just 100% interested in football. Other than making him swim, I don’t want to really force him down any route as long as he’d participating in some form of physical activity, and the football training’s twice a week with a weekend match. Hopefully he will get a bit of a bug for boxing, BJJ, MMA, etc, at some point, and if he’s ever in the routine of staying in all week like your nephew was, then I will be forcing him to go somewhere and train.

Keep us updated.

I know everyone says this and it sounds really cliché, but just keep turning up. It seems like a month ago I was saying the same stuff you are, and now I’m surviving a 5 minute round against some of our blue belts and beating a lot of our whites.

Well, that's the thing, he's tried a whole bunch of stuff but never really stuck with any of it. He played cricket when he was younger, he got a few belts into tkd, he played gridiron for a season or two. Dunno if it's related to his learning difficulties or discipline problems or laziness or what.

Anyone else do the belt whipping for promotions in your school?

It's starting to give me fucking anxiety.

You've got not choice here, the shit you'd get for refusing just wouldn't be worth it

Everyone does it from white to black.

None of this where they only whip your back either, you get belted front and back and half to walk down the gauntlet twice.

I fucking hate the gauntlet, one of the dumbest things in all of jiujitsu. I'll take a shark tank / man in a hole all day over that nonsense.

I've had to put a halt to my jiu jitsu odyssey for a few months.

I've been convinced to do the Vienna Marathon in April, I just don't have enough hours in the week to train jiu jitsu and train for a marathon. Hope to get back to it in April or May.

I've seen some horrific whippings.

There's some big lads who put every ounce of their being into the swing.
Because people are dickheads and there's something built into groups of dudes that naturally form hazing rituals as part of the process of being part of the group and moving up.

Assholes.

I completely get that. Have you taken a break from bjj for running before?
