If it's at all practical, go to Marcelo's or Renzo's.

I don't know what your finances or travel times are like, but there's maybe a dozen guys in the whole world on their level, and if you have to opportunity to train there, do it. Between those two I'd personally chose Marcelo's. just because I like him and his style more, but Renzo/Danaher literally has the best guys on the world training on those mats daily.


In terms of gear, you'll need a gi, start with a white one, but ask at whichever gym you rock up at. They might have a preferred brand, or even include one with your membership. You'll need a rashie and some grappling shorts if you want to do no-gi, again just ask at the academy. Mouthguard probably. Knee pads/sleeves, spats, groin guard are all optional.
Yea just looked, its about $250-300 per month for unlimited classes. I just found a new train that would take me there in 15 minutes, so I think I'm gonna do it. I'd rather drop $300 on training at an amazing place than time spent going out on drinks and destroying my body anyway so this will be good motivation to go out less and workout more. I'll probably start off 2-3 times a week and ease myself into going 4+ days a week.

Also if I'm not gonna do compete professionally is there a difference betwen no gi vs gi training? I guess no gi is more practical for real world confrontations?

Not really. Each style has its benefits and it'll just depend on what you prefer really.

No-gi is definitely more ‘realistic’. I think if you’re paying for unlimited classes and aiming to get there 4-5 times per week it’d be a good idea to do a share of both styles and then after a year or so you might settle on one.

Personally, I’d do nothing other than no-gi if I had the option. Just a personal choice, but as it is I only really have gi as an option.

I still don’t really see a massive advantage. There’s the chance that they’ll be wearing a tough jacket and you can sink in a cross collar choke, bow and arrow, etc, and have a lot of common grips, but no-gi stuff works on clothed people and shirtless people.

I’d say gi training prepares you for self defence or MMA much better than if you didn’t train any BJJ at all, but if you knew you were going into an MMA fight or street altercation in a year’s time and the gi and no-gi training was just as high quality and readily available, would you even go to the gi classes at all?

You could spend a year learning all the gi techniques available and then the bloke you get into a fight with is wearing a vest.

The gi is a useful tool, because it can closely simulate clothing without being stretched or torn to shit. So it can be reused over and over again in training. We used to wear old t-shirts and hoodies, and there's loads of carry over. I'm not expecting anyone to play worm guard with a guys overshirt, but there's plenty of chokes and tie-ups that'll work with even a t-shirt, think about loop chokes, utterly perfect for someone in a t-shirt. Bundle it all up at the back and loop it around the throat. I once caught a guy in a lapel half-nelson using the strap of his backpack.

Yeah, as I said, there are times gi training will be worthwhile and applicable, but if no-gi has a 100% carryover to absolutely any MMA or one on one street situation, surely it wasn’t unfair to say it’s more realistic?

6 of one half a dozen of the other. I don't think either is more or less "realistic" and it's more about your goals, mentality and how you apply them to your training.

Jiu jitsu is for fags. Where I come from we stand up and shoot the fade, we don’t roll around on the ground with other dudes.

He sounds brilliant to be honest, I think i'm convinced on joining the gym now.

I think the GI can be useful for MMA or street fights, if you train correctly.

I see too many guys training with the gi and doing things that only work with the GI, then I can´t see the point for. I mean, guarda aranha, Z guard and all that crap that only works if you are in a bjj tournament with a gi.
Fuck that with all due respect.

The video primate posted shows how useful the gi CAN BE, if the right techniques are trained.

Any tips on a good guard to start learning with? Obviously I end up in closed guard every now and then, but I mean a ‘long range’ guard when you first make grips in sparring, like spider guard, worm guard, etc. Are there any obvious ones for white belts to start with? Any I should avoid?

Somebody waffle on about guards for me, it’s a huge hole in my game. I don’t actually have a plan in mind when I engage.

I quite like spider guard to start with. There's a lot to learn there. It'll teach you a lot about posture and distance control, and grips There's a lot of easy transitions to basic submissions from guard that you'll already know, like triangles and armbars. You can move from spider guard to some of the more advanced/exotic guards. Downsides are that it will fuck your hands up if they're not already conditioned and your hips will hurt like it's day one all over again.

I went back to training last Friday. It was so great to be back. There's a bunch of new faces on the mat, and all of the old guys are still there (and not one cunt has been promoted). I managed the warm up/technique, then avoided everyone during roll time. A couple of the senior guys offered to act as grappling dummies on alternate rounds, so I basically just sat in a corner with them and rolled around on them working out my positioning movement again. Then we'd swap and I'd lay under a side control and flop around like a suffocating fish for five minutes. Did three or four rounds like that, soft as anything and had absolutely no dramas with my knee at all. Second night back tonight, and I'll be doing much the same thing.

My physio is super happy with where I'm at, his only concern is basically that I'm so far ahead in my recovery timetable that he doesn't want to push it too hard. I'm basically at month 8 of a 12ish month recovery, but I'm sitting at about 99%, so there's a real risk of jumping the gun, re-injuring something and taking a huge step backwards.

Cheers mate, I’ll watch some spider guard videos. I only get to BJJ 3-5 times per month so hopefully that will give my hands a bit of a break. I always see those fucking gnarled, lumpy knuckles on black belts but I’m sure that must happen when you’re gripping a gi for 10 hours per week or something.

Congrats on the comeback. Just take it easy, even if it means working your way back into it slowly over the next year. It’s easier said than done, but there’s no rush and you’ll be fucking devastated if you fuck something and go backwards a couple of steps.

Cheers mate. I'll absolutely be taking it easy for a while. I doubt I'll be doing any proper rolling for at least a few months. Luckily there's a bunch of senior blues and even white belts who are cool enough to help me out while I finish recovering.

This has made a lot of stuff clearer. I’m definitely going to start playing the the double-sleeve grip and messing about with foot positions, lassos, etc.

I was up until about midnight watching youtube stuff and the two guards I liked the look of the most to start with are spider and butterfly.
