KIRKLAND LAING - DEAD

  • CHB will be closing down as of 31st July 2021. It's been a brilliant experience to run the website for the past 9 years, however it's time for me to move onto different projects. Thanks to every single person involved, from staff, former staff, posters old and current. All support means more than anyone knows. Thanks for your understanding.

I checked it out on-line and they didn't give a reason for his death so far as I know. In his 60's, so it could be damn near anything.

RIP Champ

I see where lots of news sources are citing his fall several years ago from 4 floors up that put him in the hospital as the cause of death. They didn't elaborate so I'd assume he was in some sort of bad way all those years due to his injuries.

Steve Bunce who knew him well has written the above article.

Kirkland Laing unfortunately had a Leon Spinks like self destructive streak about him.( Drugs -Alcohol -Gambling addictions).

After his win over Roberto Duran...His promoter Micky Duff had some big money fights lined up for him...But he could not find Kirkland and no one in his circle knew where he was or how to contact him. Laing had gone on one big party he turned up 9 months or so later having blown his paycheck for the Duran fight. In his subsequent fight he lost to Fred Hutchings.

Hutchings would go on to fight Thomas Hearns for the World Title. Kirkland laing would return to the British and European circuit. Looking good when he trained and losing to average fighters when he could not be bothered to train for fights.

This one is with the legendary British commentator Harry Carpenter. When Kirkland was still an active fighter.
