Was going to post a meme of a Manny Pacquiao quote where he says he only ate one small meal a day growing up.

Thus showing how one of the greatest of this generation was literally malnourished growing up.

Hard to compare eras. Huge differences in every aspect of the sport.

Sports science has moved on dramatically though. You can see it in every sport. People are bigger, faster, stronger. Records get broken.

Boxing is only partly physical though. It's mental and technical too.

It also requires certain natural abilities like punch power and resistance, which are in part natural, which scientic advances can only improve in part.

Yeah but my point was...people talk about how modern boxers would have an advantage because they don't grow up malnourished...

Yet my point is...many modern boxers...especially those from Asia and South America and Africa do in fact grow up malnourished.

Fair enough. I missed that. It's been a long day.

I thought it was just the usual past /present boxers are better argument.

I'll need to give this some thought before responding. It's late in the day and I've had a few beers.

Nutrition is interesting though. Your diet, your ancestors diet, and your mums diet during pregnancy can all have health and development implications.

I think the diet stuff will make a difference amongst heavyweights.

Basically the diet will allow there to be more big guys...hence a bigger pool from which to draw from.

Lower weights though...I dont think it matters as much...and in the lower weights you see very poverty stricken countries dominate.

Been sayin this for a while, too many people love the old school dudes cause they had way more heart
Yeah...but my point is the argument isn't great because many boxers today did grow up not getting enough to eat.

Guys like Pacquiao were practically starving growing up.

Pacquiao was a big money fighter tho, he grew up starving but when he made it big he had much better training and a better diet then dudes did back in the 70's or 80's remember he got knocked out like 3 times in his younger days, he became a beast when he got his name out there

I think there's some truth to modern training and nutrition helps. Malnourished Pac was knocked out twice.
But with how diluted the champs are, 4 belts per division, 17 divisions vs 1 champ and 8 divisions, I wouldn't bet on a paper champ vs an old school one.

My dad mowed his lawn with an old push mower, he was up by 6am. He was far meaner, tougher than myself.

Life was just harder on everyone back in the day, I do doubt any of us are as tough as those old timers,

Boxing is the in stone ages as far as strength and conditioning, and effective training without killing yourself(sparring). That and technique is arguably more important than athleticism in boxing, in the pros at least
