Movies Made To Traumatise Children

Do you ever sometimes recall a "children's movie" from your youth and now realise that it was a horrifying and traumatic experience designed to leave mental scars on the minds of young children?

It could be the undiluted fucking horrors of Neverending Story, from that horse drowning in mud to the creepiest bastard flying dog you ever saw or might just be Bambi's mum getting shot?

For me I just remembered a good example of absolute nightmare juice called "Dot and the Kangaroo" (1977)... which would air on terrestrial TV now and again to catch unsuspecting children out.

Obviously Australians who made it (who else, right?) and it was a strange mix of live action film with animated characters merged on and it had this dream like unworldly feel.

Dot meets her Kangaroo friend...

The stuff of children's nightmares.

Anyway, there's plenty examples of this... what you got?

I haven't seen it since I was a kid but I always remember the Land Before Time having some sad moments in it. One that really stuck in my mind was when one of the dinosaur's mum dies, it was grim. I'd probably say Lion King for the same reason too, the scene where Mufasa dies is genuinely sad  Scar is an ATG movie villain.

Land before Time was a masterpiece. Watched it again a few years ago, dark as fuck.

This is a good thread @Broxi .

Mostly because it is reminiscent of a @Haggis type thread.

But anyhow...most Christmas movies freaked me out.

the way frosty the snowman melted to death... Rudolph being treated like shit till he could do something for others.

Non Christmas movies ...Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was kinda fucked up.

Charlie and the chocolate factory sucked. It wasn't as good as the sequel. Snowpiercer.

I tried to watch “Labyrinth” with David Bowie with my kid recently and there is not a puppet on that movie which isn’t absolutely horrifying.

Never seen The Dark Crystal but what in the name of fuck!!

My folks got me the video of the Dark Crystal because I loved Labyrinth.

Apparently I ran through crying and asked them to switch it off. It's bleak as anything.

The bad guys are weird vulture, rat, cockroach hybrids that have killed the planet and pretty much everything on it. I assume the good guys save the day, but I never got that far.

They made a TV series a couple of years ago on Netflix. We watched the first episode and the Mrs made me switch it off because she found the puppets disturbing.

The Witches. 1990

Everything about it is pretty terrifying.

From the little girl stuck in the painting

To the attempted child abduction

To the reveal of the witches

To the transformation

To the ending
the two little boys stay as mice

Ludo and Sir Didymus are OK.

Not sure about Ludo, he's a bit disturbing himself... he was the one the wee horrible bastards had strung up upside down and were hitting with sticks or something like that?

Then they fall in that swamp that farts and makes you stink forever if you fall in it.

That's the guy. He's also friends with rocks and can call them by shouting.

I fucking loved it at a kid. Watched it all the time. Have it on dvd now, but it's usually on TV every day anyway. About 5 different channels seem to have the rights to it.

The crow man from wurzel gummidge was a seriously sinister bastard as well..
