America's business of prisons thrives even amid a pandemic

MINNEAPOLIS — As factories and other businesses remain shuttered across America, people in prisons in at least 40 states continue going to work. Sometimes they earn pennies an hour, or nothing at all, making masks and hand sanitizer to help guard others from the coronavirus.

Those same men and women have been cut off from family visits for weeks, but they get charged up to $25 for a 15-minute phone call — plus a surcharge every time they add credit.

They also pay marked-up prices at the commissary for soap so they can wash their hands more frequently. That service can carry a 100% processing fee.
As the coronavirus cripples the economy, leaving millions unemployed and many companies on life support, big businesses that have become synonymous with the world’s largest prison system are still making money.

“It’s hard. Especially at a time like this, when you’re out of work, you’re waiting for unemployment … and you don’t have money to send,” said Keturah Bryan, who transfers hundreds of dollars each month to her 64-year-old father at a federal prison in Oklahoma.
Meanwhile, she said, prisons continue to gouge.

“You have to pay for phone calls, emails, food," she said. "Everything.”

The coronavirus outbreak has put an unlikely spotlight on America’s jails and prisons, which house more than 2.2 million people and have been described by health experts as petri dishes as the virus spreads.

that shits an hour and a half long

you got some cliff notes so I know what I might be getting into?
i watched it right after i woke up, so i can't give the best rundown.

lse = london school of economics, i didn't feel like there was much of a political bias to it.

i'd say skip throught he presentaion from 6-36 mins and see if you wanna sit throught he whole thing. the graph about lobbyist cost increase over the past 20 years towards the end of it was something i hadn't seen before. fair enough it will cost more than 70 years ago, but what possible (and acceptable) reason is there for that increase over the last 2 decades?

tbh though,I find the entire concept of 'lobbyists' as it exists repugnant ............its open bribery and I suspect they are just demanding larger bribes now........

63 k and 27% are from a basic google, might not be real.

av household income = 63000
total to tax = 27% = $17000
33/17 = 1.94

so that's damn near all the tax everyone has paid the last 2 years. is also bad to let all the businesses close so no one has a job, but there's a middle ground in there.

there IS a middle ground

but we wont even get that close

and the money we so happily shoveled out to corporations was BORROWED

my kids and grandkids are going to be paying for it...................we hit record deficits WITHOUT this shit, and are at a record national debt PRIOR to it as well...........

so they handed over all that money that they didn't have and they are FOR FUCKING SURE going to tell us in the next year or two how we will have to cut SS and Medicare to pay off the staggering debt and 'we are all in this together' and the rest of the shit..............

they know EXACTLY what they are doing...............

whats amazing is that so few people seem to understand.....................and so they keep voting for these despicable shits

i see 2 potential solutions:

there is a small unclaimed part of africa that anyone could make a country in. we get rich pandering to the lowest level of conspiracy guy and set up a hippie communation.

or new political parties that want to change things.
