@Boxfan, Liston was not comprehensively destroyed on two occasions by Ali. A li was never a one punch artist, and to even think that he genuinely knocked out Liston in the second fight is a joke. Louis beat every opponent that he had to face and also lost to others, to suggest that his list of opponents is inferior to Ali"s is totally unfair. Herb Silver , who was he when Ali fought him? R egards Mervyn The Gee
Hi mate. You've got me mixed up with @Boxalot . Easy done as the names almost the same. But Im a Liston fan too. Lots of people weren't around when he was cutting a swathe through the heavyweight division, unlike yourself and me. Theres some fighters on his record who were very good that even we don't know about but Folley,Machen,Williams were terrific fighters and Nino Valdes was the destroyer of British heavies.
However,I do think that when it was time to fight Ali that he was quite possibly a bit past best. Another thing these young guns don't know is that Ali was given marginally more chance against him than Douglas with Tyson. IE it was a massive shock when Clay as he was then came out on top. Liston had come off 2 one round wins over a terrific boxer in Floyd Patterson.

"Boxfan,How about this list,? Walcott,Charles,Schmelling,Sharkey, Braddock,Conn, Farr,Buddy Baer, and Max Baer, you reckon all these are " bums"? all these were genuine contenders. Regards Mervyn The Gee
Not a single one of those is an ATG great heavyweight.

Ali has Frazier, Foreman and Liston on his record - 3 ATG heavyweights who are all vastly superior at heavyweight to anyone on Louis’ record.

@Boxalot, winning the h/weight title must make Walcott a decent h/weight, also Charles this is still my opinion. Regards Mervyn The Gee,

Decent? Yes. All time great? Absolutely not. Ali beat 3 all time great heavyweights and Louis beat none. Ali clearly has a much better record based on the evidence.

Another great issue of Boxing News this week. Jamie Moore writes about his relationship with Oliver Harrison , the trainer who died this week. Also great to see my mate, Bob Lonkhursts Book" Fighters From The East End' advertised, contains great details of some boxers who I personally had never heard of, well worth a read.Regards Mervyn The Gee

@dkos, have to agree with you. I had a pub in Finchley, and used to watch him training, apart from being a very good fighter, he is also a really nice human being. Regards Mervyn The Gee
