Today is the first of 9 days of the top pro dart players vying for the World Matchplay Title. The line-up for today, starting at 1900 BST is as follows:

Dave Chisnal l vs. Vincent van der Voort
Jonny Clayton vs. Dirk van Duivenbode
Gerwyn Price vs. Jermaine Wattimena
Dimitri Van den Bergh vs. Devin Petersen

No easy matches to get their feet wet in this one. It's straight into the lion's den with the line-up these guys are facing.

Today's results:

Dave Chisnall beat Vincent van der Voort 10-8
Jonny Clayton beat Dirk van Duijvenbode 10-7
Gerwyn Price beat Jermaine Wattimena 10-4
Dimitri van Den Bergh beat Devin Petersen 10-5

Good to see Price back in action after missing out on the Premier League due to him testing positive for Covid. He was the first World Champion to miss the Premier League.

Jermaine Wattimena got in due to Mensur Suljovic having to pull out for undisclosed reasons.

No Simon Whitlock or Adrian Lewis this year due to neither of them qualifying through tournament wins and it is the first time in years that these two aren't in the mix.

Good to have the crowd back at the darts. They are really getting into the mood with tonight's matches and making their presence known. Huge difference from last years Matchplay that Dimitri van den Bergh won with NO audience in attendance.

I'll be shouting for Gary Anderson but he's so fucking unpredictable it's unreal. If Anderson don't win it then I hope Johnny Clayton can do it. Think Joe Cullen is going to make a breakthrough very soon by getting to a major final

Monday nights results are:

Daryl Gurney 7-10 Ian White
Nathan Aspinall 10-6 Mervyn King
Michael van Gerwen 10-7 Damon Heta
Gary Anderson 10-5 Stephen Bunting

Another top seed falls when Gurney lost to Ian White who played fantastic darts, stumbled a bit on his out shots, but got composed to finish the match on top.

Gurney beat the piss out of me in a local establishment. It was best of 7 legs and at 3-0 up ge tried a "blind 180" when his first two landed in the treble but missed it. I had no answers for him...

How'd you get into darts?
Started playing in the local leagues in my city in the late 80's and stayed pretty active in league play for 20+ years. I also got into playing in blind draw tournaments and ventured into the occasional Pro based tournaments when they were close to home.

Long before the advent of the internet I'd keep up with how things were going globally by getting a publication called BullsEye News that came out quarterly in the States. It was the only way for a guy stateside to keep up with events across the pond and the pro tournaments in the States. The main issue I had with it was how old the news was since it only came out periodically.

Now, with the internet and so many options for streaming the darts I'm kind of in hog heaven. I was a long time subscriber to PDC Live but their service, although catering to darts, is woefully lacking at times with too many glitches that lose the stream, buffering, out of sync audio to action, etc. so I dropped them.

I now have a yearly subscription to DAZN that streams the major dart tournaments and the Premier League. Although not as much content as PDC Live, it is far better in quality and I am satisfied with them. Besides DAZN also shows championship fights, MMA cards, snooker, cricket and other sporting events for the single $99 a year U.S. price.

As for league, I no longer play, but do have 2 boards up in the man cave and have friends come by to play and make my way over to the dart bars to play against league players on Tuesday nights when they come in for league play and on Fridays when many players drop in for some pints and a few games practice.

The best player I've ever gone against was in what passes for a Pro level tournament here in the States. It was in a hotel in New Orleans and I signed up for the 501 event which was best of 3, a real quick format and nothing like what happens in many tournaments across the big pond.

I went through 3 rounds of play and the match I was getting ready to play would have put me in the money round and I drew a guy from, of all places, England. He was in the States making his rounds picking up money on our circuit and he introduced himself as Kevin Spiolik (sp?). He beat me 2 in a row and dashed my hopes of going farther in the tournament play. We got to talking after the match and I found out he was ranked #10 in the world at the time and had just come off a win against Phil Taylor not long before heading Stateside. Nice guy, and a lethal scorer with excellent finishing. He did wind up winning the event that year in the 501 portion.

Playing him was eye opening to what it took to be a top level player and I knew I just didn't have the desire to put in all that time and effort to try to get much better than a good league player on the local level------------and I'm OK with that.

Parts Unknown
Interesting to see Durrant go out early. He had a hot streak during Covid and attributed no crowds to being good for his nerves.
Next minute......

Tuesday nights results were:

Rob Cross 8-11 Callan Rydz
Luke Humphries 5-11 Krzystztof Ratajski
Gerwyn Price 11-3 Jonny Clayton
Dimitri van den Bergh 11-8 Dave Chisnall

Price ran through the Premier League Champion like a hot knife through butter in their match last night. Clayton wasn't even in the game.

Tonight's results are as follows:

Michael Smith 13-11 Jose' de Sousa
Gary Anderson 9-11 Nathan Aspinall
Michael van Gerwen 11-8 Ian White
Peter Wright 11-5 Joe Cullen

That first match was a great one with de Sousa getting out to an early lead and faltering enough at the end to allow Smith to come back and force the match into sudden death where Smith looked the much fresher player and took the win.

The quarterfinals are now set with the following matches in play in best of 31 leg format:

Gerwyn Price vs. Dimitri van den Bergh

Krzystzof Ratajski vs. Callan Rydz

Peter Wright vs .Michael Smith

Michael van Gerwen vs. Nathan Aspinall

Didn't update yesterday, but the first 2 quarterfinals were contested and the results are as follows:

Gerwyn Price 9-16 Dimitri Van den Bergh in a match were Dancing Dimi put it on the World Champion and didn't look back as he pulled away.

Krzysztof Ratajski 16-8 Callan Rydz-----the newcomer Rydz was skull-dragged by Ratajski and not even remotely in the match.

Today's results are as follows:

Peter Wright beat Michael Smith 16-7 in a rather boring match

Michael van Gerwen took out Nathan Aspinall 16-9 when Nathan was not hitting out shots when he had the opportunity.

Darts is kind of like golf where it's "Drive for show, putt for dough" and in darts it's "Score for show, throw outs for dough" and Nathan came up dry far too often.

Tomorrows Semi-Finals matches will pit Dimitri van den Bergh against Krzysztof Ratajski in the first match and Peter Wright against Michael van Gerwen in the second.

If I were a betting man I'd put my money on Dimitri and Peter going through to the finals, but anything can happen once they are at the oche.

Tonight's semi-finals just ended and they went just like I thought/hoped they would.

Dancing Dimi took out Krzysztof Ratajski by a score of 17-9

Then Peter Wright got the best of Michael van Gerwen 17-10 averaging just over 110 points per 3 dart throw to set up the finals tomorrow night.

If both players who made the finals play like they did today, it should be a barn-burner of a match, and one I'm looking forward to watching.
