Or does he need to beat Devin Haney first before he can claim that title legitimately?

Was having this debate with someone earlier today but could not agree on it in the end so thought I'd see what you guys think of the situation we got here. Only the WBC could cause this kind of headache in what is usually the most straightforward process in deciding who is the best in class.

Give us your vote and feel free to explain why too down below :good

(For the record I am saying that Lopez IS the undisputed champ at 135 right now and doesn't need to do anything else, he's done it already)

The debate is more one of terminology than anything else.

Lopez has obviously unified the WBA, IBF and WBO titles and Haney has the WBC one.

Similar scenario to when Wilder had the WBC title and Joshua had all the others.

It is mostly bullshit anyway these days. Why are Ryan Garcia and Luke Campbell contesting the Interim WBC title when Haney is champion, anyway?

Of course he is, technically.

However it could be argued that Loma had no business fighting at 135, and his accomplishments in that division are not very deep. Pedrazza & Campbell were solid & impressive wins, but it's not like Loma cleared out the division. You can also justifiably point out that Loma was suffering from heavy ring-rust. - Not the story of the fight, but certainly a small contributing factor. So, Lopez' titles are fairly paper-thin right now.

Still, "The king is dead! Long live the king! " :dance

I had to google that just now, I didn't realise it was for the interim title but I see ESPN reporting what you said indeed, no idea why since there's nothing wrong with Haney, more WBC nonsense. But as for undisputed, it's terminology but also the claim to supremacy, like when Crawford beat Indongo there was no question anywhere in the world who was the man at 140, but unfortunately some are posing a question over Lopez's claim as there's another undefeated fighter in the weight class claiming he's got one of the belts. Strictly speaking he's right, he has got one of the belts but what's the current value of that belt given that the Franchise belt exists in the weight class?

For instance at heavyweight there's no question Fury is WBC champ and Joshua needs to beat him to become undisputed since there is no Franchise belt there but down here the water's been muddied by the WBC. But seems so far we're all in agreement here that Teo doesn't need to fight Haney for us to recognise him as being undisputed

It would be interesting to see Loma fight Haney.

The outcome is obvious.

Then a Loma-Lopez rematch becomes inevitable.

No, the WBC ruined it for him by being greedy money-grabbing crooks and inventing the stupid franchise belt.

Old Bob and Loma also ruined it for him but not just fighting Haney before fighting Lopez.

Tbh, I think old Bob secretly knew Loma might be there for the taking at that weight and didn't want the Haney fight, when he could get his own guy to do it.

Doesn't hurt that Lopez is younger and will be more marketable for Bob too. Lopez will draw more money, and over more years.

Hopefully we get Lopez Haney, but I doubt it. Haney has the Gambia fight, and then will probably need to fight Campbell or Garcia.

Here I thought this was for the undisputed. There is still another belt roaming around? FML, this is why boxing has trouble securing fans. Monstrously stupid if the WBC seriously emailed Haney a belt. :patsch

The argument I was making with the person off-forum for why I accept Lopez as undisputed is that Loma held the belt that Haney now has, he never lost it in the ring and he didn't vacate it. The WBC took it off him and gave him something they claim is more prestigious but when he beat Luke Campbell and claimed the vacant WBC Lightweight strap he added it to his other 2 titles so for me he was the legitimate WBC champ when he then fought Lopez which was his very next fight, regardless of the WBC interference which was not actually designed to diminish Loma''s status but enhance it, I am grateful for the honest expression of views though as it's quite rightly a debatable topic now thanks to the WBC's meddling.

As much as I'm still not sold on Lopez, he beat the top dog. Haney hasn't done shit
He is def top dog, beat the man and has the most belts.

Can't be undisputed for me though. There is a WBC champ and a WBC interim champ in that division.

I personally don't class the franchise belt as a real world title. Loma should have told them to stick it, fought Haney, and kept the real belt.

The WBC are actually the worst of the main bodies for me, even below the WBA now. The only credible one is the ibf.

Why are you not sold on Teo?
At no fault of his own, he hasn't been tested. Commey, was stopped with one right hand and Loma didn't even show up to fight.
Lopez is just a dime a dozen to me, I've seen plenty of him while in the amateurs

This sounds like hating to me. You're penalizing the guy for coming up with a great game plan and having the patients and discipline to execute it against a guy many consider the pfp best fighter in the world.
The kid sent a message to Loma early in the fight that made him gunshy, now people are saying Loma didn't show up.
