Aquaman

Jason Momoa is Aquaman the true king of the seas. His father an humble fisher man shagged Atlanna (Nicole Kidman) creating all kinds of future troubles under the waves. Aquaman is reluctant to help whatever is happening under the sea, but has reasons when an hot chick turns up. William Dafoe swims about a bit. Black Manta arrives wanting revenge on Aquaman. Patrick Wilson is the big bad guy wanting to rage war on other under the sea peoples so he can then erm rage war on people above the sea for erm having boats and dropping bottles in the ocean. Aquaman and the hot chick Mera (Amber Herd) wander, get chased, fight folk and quip between themselves. At over 2 hours 20 mins the film tries to fit a lot in. It has two maybe three stories that could have been one film. As it is it never lets up, the GGI is stunning right up to the almost end, what is meant to look beautiful looks beautiful, the explosions are chaos are right up with the best you will see at the cinema. On the downside story is mixed and the level of threat from the villains just isn't interesting. I did really enjoy the movie, by far the best we've had from DC. It is entertaining, everything you want from a superhero action movie and Momoa is great in this role. Dolph Lungren should be given his own movie, how fucking cool is that guy? Seriously he is even great as a ginger, makes Momoa look like a bantamweight in every way plus out acts the rest of the cast with ease.

7.5/10 Just below what I'd give a really good movie, but I can see myself watching it again and would watch a sequel.

Yeah I watched this recently and enjoyed it, it's just a fun, movie, Momoa is great and the fight scenes are cool. Good to see that DC seem to have found another franchise in the DC universe that has worked along side Wonder Woman.

I'm looking forward to the next Suicide Squad from DC. I think the guy Dunn who made Guardians is in charge and it has got rid of Will Smith. I'm guessing no Joker too?

Watched Green Book recently and enjoyed it, heart warming, funny and a fantastic performance by Viggo Mortensen.

I know there's some controversy behind it as the story is portrayed as factual when it's mostly made up but I enjoyed it and I don't watch films for political reasons simply for entertainment.

Yeah I'm hoping the remake of Suicide Squad is better than the last one. It has the components to be excellent like Guardians, it was just the silly plot and weak villain that sunk the last one.

Watched Troy the other night. I think it's underrated. There's a few steps they could have taken and it could have been a great film. Showing more of the sacking of Troy for one. That felt like it didn't get enough time at all. The opening battle scene is class.

Watched it recently, very impressive film. Woulds love a return to that type of historical epic, you'd hope with the success of GOT we could get some maybe? Still absolutely gutted when Hector dies, hits too hard that scene.

The fuckin thing looks amazing man. Almost like being transported back to that time. The build up and fight between Achilles and Hector is class.

Yeah I'd like to see more of these big budget style epics get made too. There was a few released around the time of Troy with Gladiator, Alexander and Kingdom of Heaven. There's shitloads of ancient battles and stories that have the potential to be great spectacle films, Hannibal being one that comes to mind.

I was actually going to chance watching the Troy BBC series on Netflix but saw they cast Achilles as a black man. Probably the most over the top diversity casting for the sake of it that I can remember. What's worse is that I think Achilles looks are actually described in the Illiad.

We are stuck in superjero season still so all the film mney is going to producing them. Really need some epics back though. Think one or two bombed towards the end of that little period like Alexander and Kingdom of Heaven.

The BBC Troy series was just very poor and the casting was the tip of the iceberg. Deeply disappointed by it. I'm going to give Last Kingdom a go that is on Netflix, the bloke who wrote Sharpe wrote it and I've been told good things so fingers crossed.

Stared watching Medici on Netflix. Only 8 episodes a season, it is apparently on season 2 now with a differentish cast so not sure how its going to go. It is fairly slow, but a decent watch, more nteresting than openly exciting. It has Richard Madden, Dustin Hoffman, Brian Cox and a few other good actors.

Last Kingdom is actually pretty good, man. Better than I thought it'd be.

It was good, but a disappointment compared to what we hoped for. The story never really gripped and it should have done and Orlando Bloom was the wrong choice of lead. It also got bogged down at times so it felt too long. I watched it not too long ago, I enjoyed it, but you could see why it didn't flourish like Gladiator. The battles were top class.

Fuck.

My bad.

I thought we were talking about the TV show on Netflix. About the Vikings conquering England.

Endgame. Solid 8.

Before that I watched Fury Road which is also a solid 8.

I also watched Watchemen which I give a 6.5/7.

Den Of Thieves.

I thought it was very good anyway. I remember seeing the ads for it when it got released but didn't hear a thing about it since. Its like Heat but doesn't reach that level but its far from boring. Definitely worth a watch if you like action/heist films.

How To Train Your Dragon 3: The Hidden World

I am a huge fan of this film franchise and the cartoon series that accompanies it. Now chief of the island of Berk our hero Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) comes to realise the utopia he has created is under threat from a new deadly foe and that the dragons who live in peace with him will never be safe while they are with him. With the help of love interest Astrid (America Ferrera) and his faithful dragon Toothless as well as the old gang Hiccup sets off to find the hidden kingdom of dragons far off at the worlds edge, but will he be able to do this in time or will Grimmel ( F Murray Abraham) finally kill the last Light Fury? The voice cast includes Kit Harrinton, Gerard Butler, Jonah Hill, Cate Blanchett, Craig Ferguson, Kristen Wiig and Christopher Mintz Plasse. All still sound great and full of fervour for the films. I took my 4 year old knowing that at almost 1 hr 45 mins it would be difficult to keep his attention for the full running time, he managed to sit through it pretty well and knew every step of the story when prompted later on. That says a lot. My teenage kids enjoyed the movie and I thought it was mighty impressive. Visually it looks beautiful, the contrast the the massive battle scenes that far eclipse anything on GOT for dragons destroying stuff and the typical neon prettiness you get when CGI folks are trying to show off is dazzling. The story is touching, cruel and epic. Seeing Hiccup trying to find love in someone he has doubts loves him, seeing his best friend find his own and the moments towards the end actually grab you.

8/10 Another top class animation with undoubted rewatch value.

Overlord

D Day, a plane full of US Airborne is on way to carry out a mission to destroy a wireless station above a church near a small French village, on board is an odd collection of soldiers. We get a black guy, another black guy, a Italian American tough guy, a couple more guys with speaking roles, Kurt Russel's son and a black rapper dude acting tough as if the film is part of the Fast and Furious franchise. Immediately you think well this is different, not good just different. Then the action starts, which is great, brutal, exciting and kicks everything into gear that never really lets up. The rest of the story is easy to guess if you know anything about the film. It works, it is fun and the script is passable for what you expect in this type of movie. I loved the score, a small play on The Thing which managed to bring most of the tension before the horrific gore and cool bits happen. The acting is up and down, the film is lucky it had Euron from GOT in it and Kurt Russel's son. The lead is a totally non entity. Probably the weakest lead in a film I've seen in ages and stops it from getting near to being a cult fave or having much rewatch value.

7/10 An enjoyable romp and cool spin off of a Nazi Captain America type story.

Fire fight.

Cillian Murphy, Brie Larson and Arnie Hammer.

An arms deal at an abandoned warehouse goes south. What follows is over an hour of hilarity with a dozen or so people shooting the shit out of each other.

One of those films that's great to put on when there's nothing else to watch.

For that I'll give it a solid 7/10
