Westworld

Another of my favorite sci-fi films. I think of this movie as The Father of Modern Sci-fi - so many movies ranging from the Terminators to Jurassic Park owe their very existence to it (although I don't think it's a coincidence that this movie was written and directed by the future author of Jurassic Park...).

Although I've always thought of Michael Crichton as an author more than a filmmaker, his directing of this movie is fantastic. The first half of the movie immerses the viewer in the Westworld universe as though he or she were one of its customers. The tone of the movie starts off as fairly light-hearted and fun, but there are some dark and foreboding moments that hint at what is to come. The second half features one of the most tense and gripping chase sequences in cinematic history. Also, this movie likely invented the "jump scare ending" three years before Carrie made it a horror standard.

Rating: 9.5/10.

Saw this again recently. Still just as epic and enjoyable as every other time I've watched it.

Tried to watch Captain Marvel. Got 30 - 40 mins in and had to switch off, and I rarely swith off a film.

The whole start is just one long boring cgi chase/fight, with a couple of decent visual gags.

I like most of the Marvel films, but my major gripe with all the superhero films is that they sometimes descend into brainless cgi fights that have all the drama and tension of a computer game cut scene. This one started off that way.

Also, I knew the general story from reading the comics, but Mrs Weaver was bewildered with the various 2-d alien characters running about with no backstory or explanation.

Not as bad as Iron Man 2, but one of the worst Marvel films I think.

Was ok, wouldn't watch it again but it's not so stupid as to make it unwatchable, even if the ending was a bit meh.

I know what you mean, some films just give me a headache when there's so much going on, I watched the new Godzilla a few months ago and afterward felt like somebody had broken in and twatted me, that film is one violent assault on the senses.

Haven't seen that one, watched the one from a few years ago and didn't think it was up to much.

I loved comics as a kid, I like action movies, and I like Sci fi, but I find I get bored of people being smashed through buildings after a while.

I thought the 2014 one was alright, not much happened though which I think was one of the biggest criticisms of it, too much humans and not enough monsters. For the new one that wasn't the case, lots of monster fights and lots of hapless people getting caught up in the carnage, I can't say I didn't enjoy it but I definitely needed a nice quiet moment after I'd watched it to regain my senses.

That was how I felt about the 2014 one, I enjoyed the parachute jump, but overall it was a bit slow.

Maybe they will get the balance right if they do a third.

Stephanie(2017) - Trying out different horror movies on Netflix. Reading some of the reviews, I tried this one. I kept seeing "good acting". While this may be true, no amount of good acting can save this tired old story. 4/10

Veronica(2017) - Why do I keep trying these horror films titled with the main character's name? A Spanish horror film about a girl unleashing a demon with a Quija board. Sound familiar? Same old shit, different day. The kids were mildly entertaining. 4.5/10

I’ve gotten to see some of the Golden Globes nominees.
Altough I dont have a problem eith very long movies as I like more detail but I understand the issue cinema goers would have and I enjoyed it and the performances I thoufht The Irishman is a good but not great movie.Tne old timers give strong performances but certainly not better than Goodfellas or Casino.
The de aging looked garbage aswell to me.
Marriage story I enjoyed a lot more maybe due to a more ets say normal setting a d situation.Driver,ScarJo and Dern give good performances with a good supporting cast.Driver is a great actor.
Joker-not much to be said.Great movie.Pheonix is a favorite for a Oscar.
Once upon a time in Hollywood-maybe not a Tarantino classic but certainly a more tame but strong one.Great ensamble cast with some actors kids that might be future stars.
Pitt and DiCaprio have great chemistry.
Too bad it didnt happen in reality like in the movie.
Andie MacDowell’s daughter is gorgeous.

what say you guys?
Agree with pretty much all of that.

The 36th Chamber of Shaolin - Fairly entertaining kung fu flick. I heard this was one of the better ones, but must say I was a little disappointed with it. The bulk of the movie revolved around San Te's training and the final showdown was merely an afterthought. Still, pretty damn entertaining. 7/10

The Five Venoms - I had a tough time keeping up with all the whodunnit shit in this one. Something seems to have been slightly lost in translation, but despite its flaws, I enjoyed this one too. 6.5/10
I loved both these films when I was younger.

One of my best mate's family were originally from Hong Kong, and they had a stack of kung fu videos.

We used to watch them when we were kids and try copy them. Then when we were a bit older we used to get stoned and watch them.

Anyway, long story short. I tried to rewatch them recently and couldn't get into them.

I think it was partly my fault. It's just me who is into it at home, and I struggle to watch a movie on my own now. I always feel like I should be doing something.

Just getting older I guess.

The Godfather Part 2

Great film, the thing I love about this film is the differences between Vito and Michael, Vito was a killer sure but he also had a more respectful way with people, Michael on the other hand was just evil, utterly ruthless to anyone who dared to cross him. Vito drew respect from people even if that respect was gained by fear whereas people were just terrified of Michael. Vito had an element of warmth to him and as well as being a feared criminal he was a respected and loved family man, Michael was cold and calculating and either murdered or turned his family members against him.

The Irishman

Bobby Di Niro plays time traveller Irish Mick in this comic book origins story. The film dispenses with a story and just has stuff happen. Not for any reason. Things were filmed. For no reason. And then put in the film. I think they just got bored or were too old to care and just handed in what they had got like a Media Student at the end of his third term. The lack of story. Or anything interesting means we are left with CGI Niro going through every bit of his life with no filter of what is interesting or needed. He meets Joe Pesci who looks so tired he barely breaths never mind acts and eventually after an hour of nothing happening he meets a guy named Hoffa played by Al Pacino. Pacino looks ridiculous. He is a union boss who get sent to jail for fraud then wants to become boss again. Grippng stuff. Stephen Graham turns up and does loads of funny voices. Niro keeps looking at the camera to check if anyone is still awake then it ends. Then it ends. Then it ends. Then it ends. We also get an embarrassing scene where Downs Damon has had a fish in his car and people complain, this goes no where and adss nothing, it was just something they wrote that morning, filmed it and left it in. A god writer or editor would have ditched it. Then it ends.

6/10 A film that will be forgotten about and laughed at. But its got all these old people in it so Yay those guys. Not dead yet I guess.

Look at this shit. That's the audience on the floor after 3 hours of this shit with another 30 mins left to go. Did I mention Niro was meant to be Irish? LOL

Finally got around to watch Hereditary. Had this on my watch list for ages was meant to watch it last halloween but never got round to it.

It's a slow starter nothing really much happens in the first 20 mins or so, but damn does it take a sudden turn towards the twisted and dark. Probably the best horror movie I've seen in a long while, it wasn't predictable and the ending I loved. Toni Collette as always puts in a good performance.

If I was to have any gripe about the film is that it isn't really that scary but it is very much dark and twisted, I loved some of the imagery and while it may not scare it does shock. 7.5/10.

Rescue Dawn

Christian Bale stars as real life US Navy pilot Dieter Dengler who was shot down over Laos in 1966, captured, tortured and managed to escape. Decent enough film but ultimately spoilt by portraying one of Denglers fellow prisoners as a whacked out liability to the escape plan.
