Terminator Dark Fate - Wasn't expecting much going in after all the other sequels since T2 have sucked. But I was actually pleasantly surprised. Obviously it's nowhere near as good as the first 2 films but it's far better than any of the other sequels. It was fast paced and engaging, overall a really enjoyable action flick.

If this wasn't a Terminator movie and it didn't have that legacy to live up to I think this would of been seen more favourably. While good this was far from perfect, the opening scene will piss purists off, they basically scrap the entire Terminator story line so they can set up this new time line. While it is plausible as a way of resetting the time line for the Terminator universe it's a hard pill to swallow for all those who loved the original films.

Arnold's inclusion into the story and the explanation for his presence was quite frankly lame and some of his lines bordered too close to cringe worthy at times.

But on a positive note the trans looking augmented human wasn't half as annoying as I was expecting her to be, actually she was pretty decent. But the casting of the Dani Ramos was poor. Nobody is going to believe a 5'1", 90lbs woman is the saviour of mankind. When you've got a badass like Sarah Connor side by side with this far from imposing saviour it makes it even more implausible.

The CGI was amazing though. The CGI younger Sarah Conor was flawless didn't realise it was CGI at first.

The movie was pathetic and made joke of the franchice by having a t-800 settleing down while operating a draping business. Ramos was laughable and stuck out like a sore thumb in almost every scene she was in. We're meant to belive she's a badass in the future because she put cornrows in her air?! It was embarrasing.

Salvation wasn't very good either but was better purely for trying something new and pushing the story forward. Fate was a dull and tepid re-telling of the first. No originality , it served no puropse and had no reason to exist.
The whole savouir of humanity thing is tired and played out anyway. A new Naotor film is only going to work if the entire format is restructured.

I agree Arnold in the movie was dumb, it was a lame attempt at trying to insert him and some humour into the movie which it honestly didn't need.

And yes Dani Ramos character was laughable and it was so predictable that she was going to be the saviour and not her child as it was made clear in the early scenes she seems to be the one the takes care of the family and that's somehow meant to mean she's equipped to save mankind from a rogue AI and it's army or terminators. And yeah her future self with the corn rows did nothing to make you believe she could lead humanity to defeat the machines. When you look at Sarah Conors transformation in the 2 original films and compare it to Ramos' it's a joke to think that little girl could ever lead anything other than a bake sale.

It was indeed just a retelling for the first film in some ways, but then so was T2 other than it was hunting Sarah Conor's child rather than her. Come back kill the saviour mother, come back then kill the saviour himself, there really is no logical next phase to that other than a movie set further into the future where John Connor leads humanity to rebellion and sends Reece back to save his mother but honestly that's not a very interesting story as we already know the outcome. It's why the franchise should of died after T2 and attempt to further the story is pointless.

While the whole saviour of humanity story has been done to death any drastic change to the format would see the films become some spin off which are only terminator movies in name but not in spirit. I honestly don't think there is anyway to reformat it that it would still be terminator but also be something other than a machine sent back in time to kill someone and it's adversary sent back to stop it.

I don't think Dark Fate itself was terrible or pathetic like you say, if you judge it on it's own merits and not a terminator film it's pretty entertaining action flick as long as you ignore some bad casting and problems with the story. Problem is though is it is a terminator movie and so comparisons will be made to the first 2 films and not many films could live up to that standard and because the first 2 films basically told all that needed to be told any expansion on that story is bound to fail as it tries to squeeze out something new from a story already sucked dry of any meaningful content.

Having Arnold playing a Terminator called Carl is straight up parody. The writers clearly had no respect whatsoever for what came before.

As was said above at least Salvation had some fuckin balls about it and tried to bring something different to the series. In the right hands that could have been a proper second chance for the series. Arnie's part of the story is done as has been since the third one. If they ever make another one it should be about the last days of the future war with the machines. Bar Salvation the entire series has been effectively shit remakes of T2.

Have never got round to that book actually, big Dostoevsky fan of course though. Not difficult to see thematic parallels with all kinds of literature, such a brilliant film.

It's worth a read and not that long of a book. I've not read or seen anything filmwise that the narrator fucks with you the way 'Notes From Underground' and openly calls you an idiot for believing whatever crazy shit he just said. Hilarious, mind bending read.

Pulp Fiction

As with most Tarantino films it could lose a good 15-20 minutes from the overall running time and it also loses marks for one of the most irritating characters in film history, that french chick who Butch is banging.

Still a really enjoyable film though.

The Irishman: Great. If you like Goodfellas etc you simply can't go wrong..
The Good Liar: Brilliant. Like a feature length Tales Of The Unexpected.
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood: Shit. Quit after a very long 15 mins.

I've said it before that James Cameron got damn lucky with Terminator 2 being as good as it was because it was a sequel that never really needed to be made as The Terminator is a great standalone film. All the other sequels are just typical sequels beating the dead horse of the original.

Deja Vu

Strange film starring Denzel Washington which starts out as a typical thriller about an ATF agent investigating a ferry bombing and then it becomes a sci-fi time travel thriller.

Nothing special but worth a watch to pass a couple of hours.

Menace II Society

Main characters are really unlikeable, so it's kind of hard to actually give a fuck about them. Worth a watch but Boyz N The Hood is way superior.

A Man for All Seasons (Charlton Heston version)

Faithful adaptation of the play, also directed by Heston but with very little flair except for a couple of shots here and there. Not going to rag on Heston as he is what he is but his sole American accent surrounded by Brits was funny.

I liked it when I was a kid. But kids like to be edgy, and I was under the misapprehension that I too lived in the hood.

Tried to watch it again in my twenties and was really underwhelmed.

Rabbit Proof Fence.

Amazing story and a pretty sad one taking in the whole context it was getting across.

Google for the story but well worth a watch.
