The Expendables

Big name action stars unite in this kind of "Avengers for adults" action film about a term of mercenaries sent to bring down a corrupt regime in a throwback to the action films of the 1980's, it's loud, stupid and cartoonishly violent but that being said it's still good fun and easy to watch.

Mission Impossible 4, 5, and 6.

I hadn't bothered with these movies before because the 2nd movie was so bad. My mate said I should check these out though.

I was pleasantly surprised. They are good fun blockbusters, with decent characters, some humour, and a few genuinely thrilling stunts. (Anything where Cruise plays to his strengths and climbs stuff).

They are silly, and don't always make sense, but they are a good distraction if you don't think to deeply.

MI4 - 3/5

Tycho Station
Too Late (2015)

Little known John Hawks neo-noir with the occasional uncovered & unshaved female body part plus a Robert Forster cameo, with independent movie vibes... Sorta shot like Birdman in a cpl. of long, single take sequences but following a nonlinear narrative. It's post-modern genre play free of any budgeted movie shenanigan, so kinda experimental like Orson's The Other Side of The Wind. But as per character study, storytelling or suspense, comes off a little short. CONSIDER watching it if into noir & independent cinema.

4 was always my favourite. Best soundtrack, Apollo in the Uncle Sam gear, good training montage, and big Dolph.

3 is great too. Even with all the homoerotic tension between Rocky and Creed.
I remember years ago running around the house shadow boxing going "I'm gonna break you Balboa, you has been, I'ma beat ya real bad" and my mum was like "you want to grow up and get a girlfriend you're nearly 23"

Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)

Studio Ghibli coming of age story about a 13 year old witch who has to spend a year alone in a European city to prove herself.

The animation is beautiful, notably in the city design, which is charming and distinctive, yet believable and familiar.

The story is loose and simplistic, Kiki starts a delivery service, loses her way a bit, before finding herself again with some help from her friends.

The real drama lies in Kiki's internal struggles as she tries to find her place in the world and come to terms with growing up.

There are also a lot of the familiar Ghibli themes and motifs. Flight, weather, tradition versus modernity, nature versus science, magical realism, and childhood.

4/5.

Black Panther

Average comic book yarn and easily the most overrated film of the last decade, the enjoyable bits are spoiled by long spells of boredom, it also lacks the humour found in the other Marvel films.

Leon: The Professional

Excellent thriller about a hitman who takes in a 12 year old girl after her family is murdered by corrupt DEA agents, very stylish and violent and a brilliant debut performance from Natalie Portman as the 12 year old. The only thing that really lets this film down is Gary Oldman's performance, this guy is supposed to be a DEA agent yet he seems more like a character Jim Carrey would play, he's more comical than menacing which doesn't really suit the tone of the film.

I've often thought many of Oldman's performances were too over-the-top.

His performance in Leon would've better suited a flamboyant mob king, not someone who's supposed to be a secretly corrupt undercover cop.

That's what I thought surely his behaviour would draw attention from his non-corrupt colleagues.

Anyone ever see the version Francise?

The Portman Reno relationship is even more problematic.
