New Mutants - Disappointing to say the least, trailer looked good, made it out that this would be a marvel film with a horror theme but the bad reviews turned out to be valid. The trailer was scarier than the actual film itself, as a horror film this was a resounding failure, no tension at all, the director didn't have a clue on how to build towards a scare.
The script for this was weak, story is predictable and mundane, so run of the mill. The characters are OK I guess but I couldn't help feeling the whole thing was poorly executed. Ironically in the background they had the TV show Buffy the vampire slayer playing in a couple of scenes which clearly the director used as inspiration such as the smiling face men clearly influenced by The Gentlemen in the Buffy episode Hush. But all this did was show you how poorly this film had portrayed similar characters compared to Buffy.
It's a shame the whole Marvel/Horror film idea was a good one, something that could of sparked new interest in the X-Men series after the failure of Dark Phoenix. They had a decent cast with Charlie Heaton from Stranger Things, Anya Taylor-Joy from The Witch, Split and Queens Gambit and of course Masie Williams from GOT. But they had little to work with here.
The overall plot was weak as hell. The whole overcome your own fears storyline has been done many times before and done better and honestly not sure why they went with Danielle Moonstar's story as the main plot which resulted in them having the stupid giant bear as the big bad threat, when Illyana Rasputin;s character seemed to have a far scarier and disturbing back story.
Not the worst film I've seen, still better than Dark Phoenix. But overall really forgettable.
