Looks like he is gonna price himself out.

If he thinks the Purse of $8 Million that BJS got is peanuts.
Maybe, maybe not. Negotiations haven't even started yet. If I were in his position, I'd ask for $12m and try to play hardball and maybe come down to $10m. Refusing this fight is nothing but down side for him though. He'll feel like a mug when he loses that belt somewhere down the line for peanuts, and be known as the most famous ducker in the world.

He's playing the leverage game. He has the title Canelo wants to unify all the belts, so he's playing it for all it's worth, and then some.

Yup, can't blame him for that. It is a bit ridiculous calling the $8m Saunders received 'a little bit of money' though. That's more than he's earned over his entire career and a further 4 or 5 defences against nobodies.

After doing a bit of research about the guy, the sites I saw claim he's got a net worth of around $1 million, so to insinuate that amount of money for one fight is not sufficient is ludicrous. That is enough money for him to retire on and live comfortably if he lives right and doesn't fall into "Living Large".

Maybe Canelo should just tell him to fuck off and take the chance Plant loses his next fight and negotiate with the new champ.

But I'm betting if they drop anywhere near what they paid BJS, he'd sign, and be happy to do so.

I don't care how much any fighter gets paid tbh, except when it prevents fights getting made. Fanboys boasting about how much their favourite fighter gets paid annoys the living shit out of me. In this case, I expect Canelo will quite happily overpay to get that last belt, it's just a matter of how much. In a hundred years time, no-one will care if his net worth was a few millions dollars less, but they will remember who the first unified and undisputed SMW champion is.

All that said, I don't expect him to lowball himself just to get this fight made. It just gives other fighters a precedent to ask for stupid money in future, and he's earned where he is right now.

Full Caleb Plant interview from today here, from 16.37:

Makes some valid points about Saunders and the loss, talks about his own qualities and so on, difficult to figure out if he genuinely wants the fight or not. It would be nice if someone asked him how he thinks he will get better opportunities and paydays in future if he doesn't right Canelo.

There's not a bigger payday on the horizon-----and far beyond the horizon for Plant if he doesn't take the Canelo fight. They guy is not a household name, has 21 bouts under his belt and has fought a bunch of fighters I've not heard of to get his title. Canelo's record is filled with fighters that are known to even casual boxing fans and many of them future Hall Of Famers.

The ONLY negotiating tool Plant has is that last belt that Canelo wants. I think Plant knows his time as champion would be over if he takes this fight, but what a payday for relinquishing that trinket of the alphabet soup that awards belts to relative unknowns.

With respect, if you can push for 'living large' money, why would you settle for 'live comfortable'?

The point I was making was Plant can take this one fight and retire and live comfortably (VERY comfortably) with the right investments and mindset.

I'm not saying if, but rather when he loses his belt, he shouldn't continue boxing, but one giant payday like is being talked about sure makes losing that belt easier to swallow and that's enough money to set him up for life and not have to step into the ring ever again.

Plant would have to beat Canelo to continue getting big paydays as a boxer, and by big, I'm talking several million a bout, but let's face it, Plant is not a household name in the States who has a huge fan base to back his fights, and he's from Tennessee. Canelo has a much bigger fan base in the States than Plant currently has by a long shot.

That's a good sign this fight will happen. I expected him to demand ridiculous shit like 50/50, but $10m is reasonable. His manager won't be thanking him for starting at such a low amount though, Canelo may well just instantly agree to it when they could have squeezed a couple of million dollars more out of it.

Seemed fairly non-commital in the interview. "I am going to leave it to my team.."

There is a lot of that, but saying 'that number sounds about right' is encouraging. It would certainly be a bad sign if he dismissed $10m outright.
From what I understood from that interview is Uncle Al Haymon is going to demand that the fight is Showtime PPV. Believing the fight will generate more money for both fighters.

DAZN are gonna have to increase their paychecks substantially for both fighters when they make their bid. Caleb Plant has something neither Callum Smith nor Billy Joe Saunders had which is a rival American TV competing for the fight.

So still alot of back and forth Edward Hearns is now playing in the big leauges. He can no longer rely on Sky Sports or IFL TV... To present his narrative as the correct one. And incite fans against anyone who does not agree to his terms.
"You see Koogs I have tried my best but they have simplest priced themselves out.." Dont see that line going to well.
