Haha... yeah that's not really surprising. It's a muddled mess. Not even Pacino knew what was going on. He was not thrilled with the movie or his experience with Friedkin at all. Doesn't talk about it. I can't imagine Spielberg even touching the script for Cruising, but your version sounds spot-on lolThere's a good book about Friedkin (by Claggett, maybe?) where Billy watched the first cut of Cruising, went very quiet, and finally said, "What the fuck ever possessed me to make this movie?"
Apparently, it was initially developed for Spielberg to direct. Can you imagine how funny that would be? Spielberg's Cruising, with the John Williams score. Probably Dreyfuss in the lead. The "Spielberg Gaze" (TM) as Dreyfuss stares longingly at some guy's ass.
What possessed him? I think Billy was on the Colombian marching powder.
I have Friedkin's autobiography. It's a great read, though I feel like you have to take everything he says with a grain of salt. He is a classic bullshitter. I wish he would leave his films alone, but he's a tinkerer like George Lucas.
