My Bloody Valentine is the best 80s slasher not named A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Don't even @ me.
Hell yeah, bro. Saw that on the big screen in early 2019 with the director in person for Q&A. Hadn't seen it in years and it totally kicked my ass. Definitely a top 10 slasher, easy, EASY. Way better than stuff like Prom Night. I was thrilled to get the new bru-lay with extra cleaned up footage. The extended cut is much more graphic than the theatrical. The director said there was even more stuff that got cut, which is a shame, but at least we got some of it.

I have been watching a lot of slasher films recently -- The Initation, The Prowler, Sleepaway Camp, Friday The 13th Part 3, but I thought My Bloody Valentine was the most accomplished by quite some distance. Not only does it have the most interesting and likeable cast of characters, but this kill is ridiculous. The build up, the POV shot, the sheer visceral brutality of the climax. I think it's my favourite kill ever. It rivals anything Argento ever did. The ending is bonkers too. Love it.

Top 10 slasher? I think it's vying for a top 5 spot.

Another cool little touch was earlier in the film when the guys all first see their respective girlfriends, Sylvia's boyfriend picks her up by the head just like the killer does here. Nice bit of foreshadowing.

"most accomplished by some distance" - Very true, and what's funny is that George Mihalka wasn't even really an accomplished filmmaker at that time. Or at least he hadn't demonstrated it yet. My Bloody Valentine is only his second feature film. I've seen his first film, Pickup Summer AKA Pinball Summer. Twice actually. It's just a dumb, fun teenage comedy in the vein of Porky's or something. A lot of the cast would go on to reappear in MBV. I like it, but there is zero indication that this crew were capable of something like My Bloody Valentine. I don't know if it was just the stars aligning for the right moment or if the director was hitting his stride. MBV has it all, it's got atmosphere, character, tension, scares, gore, everything. Top 5 slasher sounds fine to me too. As far as Canada is concerned, it's easily #1.

I’m a huge slasher fan. Check out “Intruder” from 1989. It’s not very well known but it’s one of the last great slashers from the 80’s.

Awesome.

I don't know if it had anything to do with being chopped to bits by the studio on release, but I have no idea how it wasn't hugee. This should have been the one to kick off the big slasher craze of the 80s, not Friday the 13th from a year before.

  1. Slasher films are stupid
  2. @Addie
  3. @ doesn't even deserve to work on you
  4. Nobody knows anything here and I am putting the clock up. The lack of championship heart in this thread is something that I'd only expect in Britain. Some of you American posters oughtta be ashamed.
  5. Don't touch your face.
  6. No one touch your face
  7. I can't see anything Joe posted but it's probably the only good thing in here that's happened since I left.
