Sports Commentary

So I saw Andrew Cotter, (I've met him a few times. Good guy, great voice), on the news talking about the Lockdown commentary he has been doing on his dogs, and it reminded me how valuable commentary can be.

Who are people's favourite and least commentators?

Have you ever met any? Any stories?

Any clips of good, funny, or terrible pieces of commentary?

Anyway, here's a classic from Norway beating England in 1981.

I've met quite a few commentators.

The funniest I can think of off the top of my head are:

Michael Cole, (WWE), passed out drunk in an Irish bar.

Jim White, (UK football), out his face with red wine lips, bouncing off the walls in an Irish pub in Glasgow.

Jim Nance - (US multi sports) - being told to move out the way be a wee old lady at the Open in St Andrews. She couldn't see the golf for his shoulder pads I reckon.

Sure there must be some more.

Regarding great commentary, these will be pretty obvious but here goes anyway:

Emanuel Steward and Jim Lampley going crazy in Round 9 of Gatti/Ward I is some of my favourite commentary ever.

I can't stand Man City, but this is one of the most epic sporting moments of all time and I think Martin Tyler used the remainder of his life's enthusiasm in this moment. He's not been the same since.

Both great examples. Both moments of high drama and excitement, and the commentary reflects that, but doesn't detract from it.

I think people forget Tylers in his mid 70's now which may explain his lack of enthusiasm, I had this conversation with a scouse mate who complained that he's got no enthusiasm when Liverpool score. I just told him to go on Youtube and listen to his commentary for Gerrards goals against Olympiakos and West Ham(2006 FA Cup final), Riise's rocket against Manchester United in 2002-ish, Collymores winner against Newcastle in 96 and countless Robbie Fowler goals through the 90's.

Beat me to it Aguuuueeeeeeeerrrrrrooooooo. I wasn't at the game as I'm not a season ticket holder and tickets for that game were fucking gold dust. I watched it alone in a boozer surrounded by about two dozen Man U fans, as soon as Aguero's shirt came off so did mine. I went absolutely fucking bananas. People filmed me for their Facebook accounts because they thought I was a madman. I will never forget.

The Sky Sports boxing team - Johnny Nelson is fine, the rest need P45s.

Other UK boxing comms - Barry Jones is fucking ace, Steve Bunce is fine when he takes a breath, let some cunt else talk.

There was radio commentary for a rangers - Celtic title decider back in 05.

Celtic were 2 points clear going into the last game and were favourites to win the title.

They were playing in Glasgow and rangers were playing in Edinburgh, so a helicopter was set up to drop the title off at the winner.

Celtic were 1 - 0 up with three minutes to go, however they conceded twice in the last 3 minutes, giving the title to rangers.

This led Peter Martin, the commentator, to quip "The Helicopter is changing direction".

Not meant to be antagonistic this one. I couldn't give a monkey's about scottish football. I just love a last day title decider, and this was a good line.

Yeah, Jones is great. I don't mind Andy Lee or Matt Macklin. I also like Paulie when he comes over.

Really miss Ian Darke from the UK boxing commentary. Him and Big Glen were great together.

Al Bernstein - Showtime is the bollocks.
HBO Boxing team were all class. Roy, Manny, Lennox included.

Here's who needs to go to hell on UK TV -

The whole of the Sky Sports footy lot. Jamie Carragher? What?
The whole of the Match of the Day lot, Lineker first. MOTD and other broadcasts re their footy is just all rich ex-footballers who are wank at giving views when they're just all mates together, nepotism.

Paul is a great shout, Bob, fantastic, forgot about that cunt. Sky's Ian Darke was class, Glenn's a laugh when pissed but also good at what he does. I can't stand Carl Froch, for someone who got that far in boxing I'm surprised he knows so little about boxing.

Andy Paterson needs to be part of some boxing commentary team, him and the rest of the Nuthouse lads, Steve Wellings on main voice.

Oh yeah no doubt, I've never really noticed the Liverpool thing and, if anything, always thought UK Football coverage to be quite pro-Liverpool. To be honest I've lost a large part of my enthusiasm for Football, especially the Premier League, in the last few years and I can't quite put my finger on why. Outside of big Champions League games and International tournaments I just can't be arsed most of the time.

I don't mind Lineker, but he's a bit dull though, which is no good when the rest of the bbc panel are the most boring bastards known to man.

Lineker was shit when they put him on the golf though.

Speaking of golf. I have an affection for old Peter Alliss, very soothing voice. Andrew Cotter is decent, as is Nick Doherty.

My favourite pairing is Butch Harmon and Monty though. Always found them funny together. Don't know why Colin stopped doing the Sky TV stuff.

This is me basically. Even stopped going to City three seasons ago because every other Saturday was £100+ a day after you'd filtered in ticket, travel, food, beer. You're £100+ there easy.

edit: fucking hate internationals. I could go through the whole World Cup and never watch a game (did last time), same with Euros. CL is fucking crap, even when City are in it, means nothing to me other than bragging rights to Scousers and United fans - and I've had fuck all of them since it started with City.
