Thiem overpowers Novak again. Gifted the second away, the 2nd set tiebreaker was poor quality imo.

Novaks serve and return got better and better as the match went on, it was poor in the first or maybe Thiem just made it that way, not sure. I thought he might have nicked the 3rd but when in trouble Domi just trusts in his firepower and as complete as Novak is he is nowhere close in that department.

Roll on Med v Rafa

Thiem looked like he was ready to tap out, then hit an ace down the tee at 0-4, inches from the line. Novak gets a look at a second serve there, up four points, and the match is pretty much over.

Nadal taking lots of pace off the ball to force Danil to create his own but indoors its not as big of a problem for him. Struggling early. Needs to get his 1st serve sorted asap. Danil looking comfortable. Fix the serve +1 and come to the net Rafa

And there you have it, youth dominates WTF once more: Medvedev beats Nadal 3/6 7/6 6/3. Nadal played quite well for 1,5 sets but just wasn't completely there in the last 45 minutes or so. It's fair to say young energy won the day, but it will be a tiered Dominic and Daniil tomorrow for the title.

Strange match, midway through Nadal started to make a lot of fatigue type errors, despite having had a day off, he looked shagged. Medvedev such a strange player but great to watch him think his way through matches. Hope we get a good final tomorrow

Like I said WTF is youth territory, year end and all. It's been some time since the big 3 won one and they were under 30 back then, Nole 5 years, Fed 9 years ago. It's probably the back-to-back elite matches that's doing oldies in.

As far as tomorrow, a very tricky pick. I would pick Thiem cause he's just so up there mentally and physically, but as you've said, Medve is so awkward and soaks up pressure extremely well, not easy to put winners past him. I guess I'll stick with Dominic, without much conviction.

I expect Thiem to do similar to what Nadal was trying but not mess up when given the shot he wants. Slice to enable the big shots. Rafa did it really well but was inexplicably missing routine closing shots. As bad as Rafa was he still had the match in his hands so the idea was right

Medvedev is a fascinating player but it must be so annoying doing all the work for him while he just waits on you.

Leaning Thiem if he competes well in the serve/return battle.

Both beat Rafa and Novak in the tournament and one wont lift the title. Harsh

If Med can improve his forehand, which is a strange almost totally flat shot he is going to be a lethal player to deal with

Pressure building on return too much for Thiem in the end. Needs to use the slice better in this matchup.

Started to come to the net too late. But its tough when your natural style plays into his hands. Medvedev is a nuisance, but incredible. Players must hate to face him. Will be fascinating to watch Nadal and Fed play him over the years, i think they will know how to dissect him with their games, though Danil will be adding more to his game also.

London masters for Danil. Congrats. Great effort from Thiem.

Yeah, that slice is keeping Thiem from being a HOF level player at this point. He's going to have to study tapes of Rog to clean that up, as the top guys are gameplanning for him now and looking to pick on it. It's literally the only safe play against the guy.

vs.

Terrible setup; looks as if he's playing the violin and it always lands in the same area of the court with the same height on the bounce. It's just a glaring weakness that I didn't really pick up on until a couple of months ago.

Danil was a beast the entire tournament and was probably the best player here, which is saying a lot.

I think Thiem uses the slice more than most its a big part of his game to set up his inside out forehand its not easy to have a slice like Roger Federer. I thought Med countered with his own hack of a slice too but when he has to hit forehands after a slice hes prone to some big mistakes whichever direction he goes.

I think many of the players coming through have no slice in their game hardly anyone uses it. They will need it against Medvedev thats for sure. How else are they going to combat him?

Look at Stefanos slice for instance, shambles of a shot. People see a one handed backhand and think hes going to be some grass wizard when in reality its his worst surface by far.

The new guys are taking over, I think we can finally say that now. 2021 surely will bring 2/4 new major champions. Only wimbledon and RG I favour Novak and Rafa against the field at both slams. The hardcourt slams they will still be favoured in a 1v1 but not against the full field anymore.

Glad Rafa got to club 20 this year because its only going to get tougher to win them now

Thiem and Medvedev can win multiple majors

It's a good enough shot vs. the lesser players, but it puts him on the defensive just about every time against the top guys. I don't see a natural transition from defense to offense with it against anyone in the top five. Weak, telegraphed slice followed by either more slices or a scrambling forehand to stay in the point.

Maybe the bar is too high with Fed... how about someone like a Gasquet...

More options, better contact point on the ball, etc.

You're right about Tsitsipas, btw. I also don't like his running forehand.

The Australian Open will be held from February 8, 2021 if all goes to plan. 14-day quarantine, testing on days 1, 3, 7, 10, 14 (and probably during competition), full payment and large increase for lower ranked players who mostly lost money this year. Djokovic was pushing hard for better price money for them since most don't reach R3 yet still travel, pay for entry, stay, trainers etc.
