That lad will never forget that win, that's like a journeyman boxer beating a world champion, well deserved as well.

Alonso and McLaren had a terrible day at indy today. Well an extension of a terrible week. Alonso is in real danger of not making the field, I want to see him in but this is a reminder of how harsh the speedway can be.

The team has had very little time on track, electrical problems and a crash on tursday limited practice time. That and it took them forever to get the car back after the crash. New team, limited running means this isnt a surprise.

Why does qualifying for the Indy 500 take place a week before the actual race?

Why does qualifying for the Indy 500 take place a week before the actual race?
Always has. Before the split there would be at times 50 or more cars trying to make the field so they had the whole month of may was for practice. Teams would also bring one off special cars as well so they needed time to dial them in. The week inbetween quali and the race was then dedicated to running together and finding a race set up.

There are still one off entries so they need two weeks of practice yet. Most of the one offs are running a car fielded by a regular team, or at least in association with, so they can share data. McLaren is going it alone and it shows.

After Alonso's crash it took them more than 24 hours to get the backup car together so they lost a full day of running. Not sure how that happened, pretty inexcusable considering James hinchcliffe binned it on his first run yesterday morning and the team had the backup ready 4 hours later.

The whole thing has been so McLaren over the last 10 years or so

Did McLaren actually develop their own car, engine and chassis, for Indy?
Sort of. Everyone runs the same dallara chassis and either a Chevy or Honda engine. They ran a Chevy. Dampers arent spec so they bought some from Andretti last minute to try and make the show.

They did buy the tub and try to do it themselves however. Last time they went with andretti and just paid him to run the program.

They had experienced people with them. They just didnt get enough laps and that is their fault. Alonso crashed and it took them way too ling to get the backup ready

Well. Here are some interesting articles about McLaren missing the 500. Beat insight I've heard thus far and a real honest public assessment of their failure from zak brown.

I'm off to the TT in a few hours, judging by the forecast I think I'll be heading straight for the pub when I get there :patsch

We're just paying for the brilliant summer we had last year, the forecast from Monday onwards is looking good so hopefully see some racing.

Hope so. Rain outs suck
As disappointing as it would be for races to be called off, you don't get bored over there, plenty of bike shows, pubs, live bands etc. on, plus the satisfaction of waking up every morning safe in the knowledge I'm on holiday and don't have to go to work.:yep
