Still a good ways off - spring release now, I believe - but genuinely looking forward to The Many Saints of Newark. Even further off, the third season of Succession is due to begin shooting any day now, if not already underway. Probably looking at late summer/autumn release for that one.

100% on board with the Succession hype, but why the anticipation for Newark? Seems a blatant cash grab to me, and I don't like the idea of Gandalfini's son getting this undeserved opportunity, and also him getting set up to fail.

Got too much respect for David Chase to believe he'd shit on his masterpiece for a few quid. It might not quite be up to the best of The Sopranos, but it won't be crap, either. I also like the idea of using Gandolfini's son for this. Quite often, with any prequel, the most jarring element of the younger version of a character is the physical appearance aspect - not an issue here, is it? Who would you prefer to see in the role?

I would rather they didn't make it at all. Prequels are bullshit, especially when they're the prequel to a character we've spent 86 episodes watching. What story is this going to tell, exactly? How Tony dropped out of college and became a gangster like his old man? We already know that. We've already seen where he comes from. :conf

 Aye, well don't watch it then, chap. Be amazed if there's not plenty to enjoy though. Looking forward to seeing young Paulie in particular.

See, it's just fan service. :thumbsup

What exactly are you looking forward to seeing young Paulie do? The same shit he was doing for six seasons of the original series, just played by a different actor doing an impression of the character and playing to the audience.:conf

What story needs to be told with this prequel? No story, because we already know all the characters and events. And Chase can't even come up with something surprising and dramatic and consequential, because if it happened then we would have known about it from the original show.

Damn... It's moments like this l see where the Trumptards are coming from. All television - or movies, or any media for that matter - is basically fan service. The people who have built a career - life, home, marriage, children etc - off of their abilities, inevitably rely upon the loyalty of their previous consumers to keep that shit on the road... It's their ability to meet/exceed that bases' expectations that determines whether the whole thing crashes and burns are not. I look forward to seeing how well David Chase meets that challenge. You crack on with whatever you're doing.

I mean I guess, but....... what story are they going to tell? We know all aspects of Tony Soprano's life and psyche better than just about any character in TV history. :conf

 I don't know what story they're gonna tell yet. That's kinda why I'll be watching it, to find out. Don't get the wrestling reference - that's possibly something you enjoy watching that I couldn't give a shiny shite about.

I do think Chase was possibly a bit burned out by the end of the final series. Clearly he and Gandolfini were having a testing time towards the tail end of the show, and although the final couple of episodes are up there with the best of the show, there are a few duds in that final run. I'm hoping that the passage of time has given Chase a renewed enthusiasm for this world he created.

I'm hoping they'll look at the Dickie Moltisanti story. There's a few lines in The Sopranos which indicate his death wasn't just as straightforward as Chrissie was told, so hopefully that's something which comes up.

Even if it's primarily about Tony, that's still an interesting story because of the contrast between young Tony and AJ, which is obviously a focal point of the series. How was Tony's dad different and what did he do to try and keep his son out of the life? It'll be interesting to see what direction the film goes with.
