The Authentic Official Robert "The Reaper" Whittaker Undefeated, Undisputed Middleweight Champion / General MMA Thread

Who do you WANT to win? (Not who do you think WILL win)

  • I want the Fighting Irish to win

  • I want the 209 to represent again

  • I just want a good, action-packed fight like the last one

  • Test to see if I can change the poll?

  • Are these options 4 and 5?

Gastelum isn't really a wrestler. He might be/probably is the best boxer in the division, he's just from a wrestling background. I mean, when's the last time you saw him with a wrestling-centric gameplan in a fight?

:hat
I don't know about being the best boxer bit but I agree, his wrestling seems to be quite average for a state champion. Probably why he decided to focus on his boxing more.

He's clearly not the best striker in the division, but in terms of just throwing hands? Adesanya and Whittaker both mix in a lot more kicks, elbows and knees than Kelvin does. Gastelum pretty much just throws punches. But anyway, he can't be dismissed as a wrestler at this point - too many good wins over good fighters using just his pressure boxing. I can't really remember him using his wrestling to get the W since Uriah Hall. :thumbsup

Great fight.
It´s silly this Adesanya vs Jones talk btw, Adesanya already isn´t that big of a puncher at middleweight while fighting guys smaller than him like Gastelum was, much less if he moves up.

Anyhow, Adesanya is the next UFC hype train to get exposed soon btw.

How can he get exposed?

He's undefeated in his career, won six fights in the UFC since February last year, won bonuses in five of them, and now if he takes a loss it'll either be to the champion, or it'll come later in a title defence. Bit late to get "exposed".

Yeah you hear "exposed" and you think someone like Erick Silva. Someone who was hyped, but then became a .500 fighter and never got close to a title shot.

Not a guy who wins six fights in 14 months and caps it off by winning an interim belt in an instant Fight of the Year frontrunner. :thumbsup

Adesanya would wanna shut the Fuck about Jones tbf.

Jones would kick the living cunt outta him inside 3 minutes
Jones said during fight week that they may cross paths one day... He is calling out a MW and it's not a good look.

Jones would probably beat him, but it wouldn't mean shit Izzy is not even in his prime, still developing, and still a MW.

What are you trying to say ? That he is a pretty good fighter ?
Oh, no shit.

There is people saying that he is the next big thing, for a while now he is being hyped as UFC next super star, that´s why they gave him Anderson Silva in a very well promoted fight.... you probably didn´t see that.

And he can get exposed as one more pretty good fighter like always happens in the UFC... and not actually the next big thing.

Remember when Antonhy Pettis was viewed as the next big star ?
Ortega, Till, Ngannou, Ronda Rousey and even McGregor to a extent.... fuck, Holloway last week, NOBODY thought he was going to get beat now, watch the video of Chael Sonnen saying that it was crazy to bet against Holloway.

The MMA community is easily taken away by the hype of certain figthers, especially strikers, and simply don´t learn (Dana usually hypes the strikers to the roof).

I mean exposed as, you know.... like Ngannou was against Stipe ?

Not that Ngannou is a horrible fighter, but remember the hype behind him before that fight ? Easy to forget that now.
How? When?

I see him getting past Whittaker.

His chin held up, maybe grappling wise or someone comes along and knocks him out. I can't name anyone that I'm sure will beat him at 185.

Did you pick Poirier to beat Holloway ? You never know, maybe someone that we don´t even consider in the conversation would beat him, nobody thought, back in the day that Frankie Edgar would beat BJ Penn, people thought it was a mismatch for BJ.

Whittaker would be 50-50...

I hate Romero, and don´t know how healthy he is now, but I would 100% pick him to beat Adesanya.
I think JAcaré would beat Adesanya either.
Rockhold too.
If GSP decided to comeback, I would pick GSP to beat Adesanya as well.

Adesanya has shown a lot more than Ngannou though. Ngannou showed that he is terrifying and can knock anybody cold with one shot. Israel has shown FAR better striking technique and reach knowledge, as well as extremely efficient defensive wrestling, excellent cage generalship and tremendous heart. I can see Adesanya being KOed, but I can't see him getting ragdolled for 20 minutes by a smaller man while looking completely clueless and exhausted, like Ngannou was.

I think at this point, if anybody beats Adesanya it will be because they are an elite fighter. Kelvin looked damned good in that fight. Pushed a good pace, threw fast, crisp hands with dangerous power, feinted a lot, he cut the cage off and didn't just follow Adesanya around, he was constantly aggressive and he showed a granite chin. A lot of big names in the division's history would have had their hands full with that version of Gastelum, I reckon. I would like to see him throw more kicks, though. He threw one kick in the whole fight and just about sparked Adesanya out with it, then he forgot all about them again for the rest of the fight.
