Ballon d'Or odds:

Luka Modric: 4/7
Cristiano Ronaldo: 9/4
Kylian Mbappe: 10/1
Antoine Griezmann: 16/1
Lionel Messi: 18/1

:think
Surprised me a bit that. Thought Messi would be closer, certainly at least where Mbappe is. I know a lot gets made of world cup performances but surely a few weeks with your country shouldn't have that much of a swing over the rest of the year.

I've always rated modric and it's good to see he's getting some love, but can't help but feel some of it is a bit overboard.

No it shouldn't.

Last season, Messi as a playmaking forward scored 45 goals for his club. Mbappe as an out and out striker in a far worse league scored 21. Mbappe did not even get half of Messi's goal total. In the World Cup, Mbappe was quality, but he ended up with 4 goals for a quality team who won the whole thing. So 3 more goals and a better level of performance over 2 weeks in a much better team overshadows the entire club season.

It's always the way in WC years though, so Modric...sure, I mean no he doesn't actually deserve it, but he had a great season for club and country so fair enough, give it to him. But was he actually the best player in the world for the 2017-2018 season? No.

I wish you had watched Messi's performance at Wembley last week live and in full. That was the performance of his career, I died and went to heaven watching that, Picking out 30 yard world class passes for fun over and over again. Just fucking incredible.

Modric has always been a quality player and had an excellent season but I can't help but feel the current love in for him is going over the top. Similar to what happened with Buffon and Pirlo in recent seasons. I can't remember off the top of my head Buffon having a really outstanding game like say DeGea against Arsenal last season and yet every cunt and his dog was swearing he was the best keeper on the planet.

He's the current Football hipster vote.

cough Paul Scholes cough
When everyone reels out those quotes about Scholes from top players. Fucking hell I remember seeing a quote from Kenny Dalglish saying Phil Neal was the best player he'd ever played alongside, now don't get me wrong Neal was a damn fine player but I doubt Kenny really meant that, he was probably just being nice.

Messi and Ronaldo have set the bar so high for themselves that it's kinda expected that they score X amount of goals and win X amount of trophies with their club.

People now look for something different with them due to that complacency. That was in the form of their national team so when both had a relatively poor world cup by the standards we have come to expect from them from their club and somebody like Modric comes along and wins as expected with Madrid but also carries the national team to a first ever world cup final then that is the difference people are looking for.

Now anyone who votes Modric would not pick him over either Ronaldo or Messi if they were given a choice as to who to have in the team they support but he has stood out in a way that people didn't expect by taking a relative outsider to a final of a world cup then that is the reason he will win.

Rightly or wrongly that's how I see it.
