We have a few knowledgeable fans of history here, but they don't have a place to gather. Hopefully this can serve as a place to just throw a few ideas or comments out there once in awhile.

To start off, I have been watching a good YouTube channel where an English guy goes through a bunch of movies and rates them on their historical accuracy. First he gives an overview of what actually happened, then he dials down. They are good - well-produced, and he is not annoying. He hates Mel Gibson though.

Well worth going through his collection, and it makes you want to revisit the movies:

Enjoy. :thumbsup

That channel is great. His Mel Gibson hatred is well deserved from that perspective  I think it was his channel where he ripped Apocalypto to absolute shreds.

He rips everything Mel Gibson does to shreds! Doesn't even acknowledge how awesome all his speeches were in Braveheart, FFS.

 TBF Edward I deserves so much better. There should be a movie about just him. What a horrendous legend. Absolute don.

He was relatively complimentary of We Were Soldiers, iirc.

The Braveheart one was gold though, "They couldn't even get the fucking date right...."

I started watching Zulu earlier then realised I didn't have the time, going to watch it tomorrow. Love that film, it was the fim that got me into history. We have a brilliant military history book publisher in the UK called Pen and Sword...Osprey too actually that have loads of great in depth books on wars and battles and armies and such. Rorkes Drift was my first jump inside them. Thought I'd watch the video after, already know most of the historcal inaccuracies, but its a damn fine film and gets most of it right.

Looking forwrd to the Gettysburg video and The Last Samurai having watched that within the last few months. Sure the actual soldier The Last Samurai was based on was a French bloke so fascinated to know more from somthing better tha my own google searches.

30,000 hooligans burn half of Constantinople down, claim a new emperor and then get smashed up by soldiers in the hippodrome.

It was left out of the video but word on the street is that Narses the eunuch (top general and that) popped into the hippodrome and offered the blues a load of money and was all "fuck the greens, Justinian is a blue". Then the blues left the hippodrome leaving the greens to get stabbed up by the soldiers.

Cool thread.

Something I really like when doing research is when you come funny things which humanise the people/time period you are reading about, like earlier I came across an evangelical preacher from the 18th century complaining that in the period after his granddad died the young people were 'licentious' and 'addicted to night-walking and frequenting the tavern'. I just like stuff like that, people have always been complaining about young people

Big fan of this blog as well, lots of interesting and amusing Early Modern stuff - https://manyheadedmonster.wordpress.com/2014/12/22/alehouse-characters-christmas-special-the-festive-binge-drinker/

Like Adam Eyre who, on the 22nd of December, 1647 made a new years resolution to save money and ‘hereafter never to pay for anybody in the alehouse, nor never to entangle myself in company so much again as I have done’. But he ended up getting hammered on St Stephens Day
