He was an old man at 60, he had signs of Alzheimer's (which his mother had), he was drinking too much, his wife wanted him to back off, the Labor party was a bag of rats starting to implode. But most of all the economy was fucked, truly fucked. Inflation for 74 was 16% , 75 was 24% and 76 was 16% with unemployment going over 1 million. He knew he wasn't up to anymore and decided to step away.

I know the Soviet mole theory and the Mountbatten coup rumors, but realistically, seeing as the powers that be couldn't get a grip on Northern Ireland doesn't leave me to believe that they would potentially plunging the country into further crisis, plus Callaghan wasn't a guaranteed successor you could have ended up with Michael Foot as Prime Minister if certain groups within Labour could get along.

Easter Island had a thriving civilization with several cooperating tribes and a unified language and religion. The staple of their diet was the porpoise, which they would hunt on canoes. The island was covered in a forest which included the largest palm tree ever known. The island also housed a very large bird population--some landlocked and others ocean going. The people there were successful enough to devote time and rssources to building statues. Tens of thousands of people lived there at its peak. They also developed agriculture.

For a variety of reasons, the enivronment on the island was fragile and the inhabitants ended up destroying the forest and thereby ruining their sources of wood for canoes and birds to eat. A main source of meat became rats at thst point and cannibalism started to occur. The population plummeted and the different tribes warred with each other. Eventually, a new group took over and toppled all of the statues and created a spin-off religion of the original. Europeans then arrived, bringing smallpox and other diseases. When the population was down to a few thousand, about half of the population was enslaved and taken to Chile. Enterring 1900, there were barely over 100 natives left.

And that's why Harrold Wilson resigned?
