Tim Tszyu 11-0 will meet Denton Vassell 25-5 for the vacant Commonwealth light middleweight title, February 8th in Sydney.

Can't claim to know much about Vassell. But I do remember he beat Sam Colomban some years ago.

Big opportunity for Tszyu mk2 to gain a title and take a further step toward the big stage.

Vassell looked decent enough coming through, but then run into probably the best Frankie Gavin we've seen.

Lost a few times after and I'm not sure how much ambition he has left.

Boxrec tells me he lost to a journeyman by very early retirement last time out. Don't know the circumstances.

I read Vassell's last opponent, Korsakas, dropped him in the 1st, staggered him in the 2nd, and his corner retired him at the end of that round.

Hardly the sort of form warranting a Commonwealth title shot, but he is a former holder of the title.

Denton looked washed up when he got battered by Eggington four years ago, let alone in that last fight :sad5

I did enjoy his reign with the Commonwealth belt. Purdy, Ushona, Colomban, Heffron -- you're unlikely to see a run of opponents like that these days for the title.

The best made boxing plans often fall flat, but Vassell looks like a fairly carefully selected opponent for young Tszyu.

Tim has looked better with nearly every fight and now looks a vastly more dominant fighter. At least with the class he has been fighting anyway.

To the surprise of no-one, Tszyu wiped out Vassell in two rounds.

Although the Commonwealth title was replaced with the Interim WBA Oceania belt. Not quite sure how Vassell qualified for that one...

So, the Commonwealth title wasn't on the line. It was for the 'prestigious' interim WBA Oceania Super Welterweight title.

Vassell was thanked for 'taking the fight on 5 days notice' when it was posted here he would be fighting Tim 12 days prior to the fight, and I'm sure we weren't the first to know.

Misinformation - so typical boxing.

Anyway, Tim got the job done quickly and efficiently, and moves to 12-0.
