Twitter is the nucleus of all trouble in the USA

  • CHB will be closing down as of 31st July 2021. It's been a brilliant experience to run the website for the past 9 years, however it's time for me to move onto different projects. Thanks to every single person involved, from staff, former staff, posters old and current. All support means more than anyone knows. Thanks for your understanding.

I made the mistake of browsing around for a few days.
What a shithole. The level of idiocrasy is astounding. I will opine that twitter is responsible for the majority of strife in the USA (and by extension, where ever those tentacles reach), and will be the cause of the impending cultural war/civil war/race war/class war.

Jack Dorsey is going to hell.

I'd actually like to see a hooded figure dropping silver dollars into the pockets of both Dorsey and Zuckerberg in front of a cheering crowd down in Union Square.

By that I mean fucking hangman who is using the coins to counterbalance their weights on a shared Scales Of Justice style gibbet.

I only had a Twitter account to follow Trump.

It looks like a trashy place to get information from.

I won’t even click on Wessshaw’s boxing Twitter links unless it has a vid to a knockout or professional wrestling.

There are a lot of good history accounts on twitter which I like. I do look around the political topics at times and I totally agree that it is toxic and a real problem.

Modern day crack addicts have more common sense also. End goal: get more crack. There is no end goal on Twitter.
It would seem the end goal (at least on the political side of things) is to simply win. Every tweet pushes both sides further and further apart.

Anyone blaming an online messaging board for society's troubles is missing the mark by a wide margin.

Crackheads are far more rational and engaging than 80% of the cunts on Twitter.
80% of the cunts on twitter are just normal people who mostly lurk and barely tweet at all. According to the company's statistical metrics, the bottom 90% of Twitter users (so, almost everybody on the platform) post an average of two tweets per month, and the most active 10% of users generate a monster 80% of all of the tweets on the platform.

Also Twitter's crowd skews mostly younger and less rural than Facebook's does. Facebook is rotten with "conservative" garbage lies and anti-democracy propaganda, btw - right-wing lies from older "conservatives" dominate that platform in terms of engagement - but nobody seems to notice that.

Twitter certainly has both problems and benefits. For example, authoritarian regimes HATE Twitter, because it's just about the most effective platform on the planet for getting hidden things out in the open and reaching a massive international audience effectively in real time.

The basic idea of Twitter is a flawed one. Having people put out a short statement about something, like how good their Starbucks was, sounded alright, but when you have a platform which is full of political debate, it reduces the conversation to whatever will fit into that 240 characters or whatever the limit is. When that happens, all nuance goes out of the window and is replaced by as shocking a statement as people can produce, because that's what will attract the most "likes".

It's dumbing down incredibly complex conversations and that's not good. It's not beneficial for conversations which have endless pros and cons - like how we fight climate change for example - because it'll only ever produce simplistic, childish answers.

Unfortunately, the power of Twitter has meant that this mentality has spread far and wide. Everyone is looking to get that extra bit of attention by being a little bit more outrageous than the previous person, which is a slippery slope, and results in just bad journalism because it's so outlandish.

I';m not in favour of banning platforms but society would be better today if Twitter had been banned years ago. It would unquestionably be a better place but it's hard to put the genie back into the bottle. Unfortunately, the conversation about how toxic social media is isn't happening yet. We've seen boycotts over Twitter's response to racism but until people realise that the platform itself causes racism then we're just going round in a circle.

I'm also in the camp which thinks Twitter is a cancer. The system seems perfectly designed, albeit inadvertently to cause division and anger. I rarely see any discussion on there not quickly devolving into insults because the character limit makes it almost impossible to express ideas on complex subjects in anything like a suitable manner.

The checkmarks, the like system, the retweet system and the way it can be used to brigade individuals is a problem. The system isn't just a "message board", there is nothing we can compare to Twitter. Not even Facebook. Which I don't particularly like either.

Twitter can be fine if it's being used for specific pursuits you have e.g. boxing. You can follow boxers, trainers, gyms, promoters and be absolutely up to the minute on everything that's happening but even with this we've seen boxers being trolled relentlessly, to the point they've sought people out to have a straightener.

It's when you scratch beneath the surface and are exposed to the politics of the platform or the nastier side then you can see the trouble it brings. People really are arrogant with thinking that humans can have this new technology thrust onto their laps and that we can foresee the consequences of it. The genie is out of the bottle now and time will tell but I believe it brings more harm than it will ever bring good.

I might have given you a "Like" for that had I read past 240 characters.
