So a guy who will have exactly ONE heavyweight bout on his record, against only a "talented journeyman," (who isn't even in the Boxrec top 25) gets a crack at the HW title? Are they going to rank Usyk at #2 or #3, after that one fight?
Even by WBO standards, that's hilarious.

Well, what the heck. Usyk is probably better than seven guys in the top ten right now. - But it's still ridiculous.

Wait, what am I saying?

The WBO already has Usyk ranked as the #1 contender, AT HEAVYWEIGHT.

Literally.

Right now.

I'm not making this up.

Somewhere, Cheech Marin is ROFLHAO.

The WBO actually announced Usyk WBO heavyweight mandatory weeks ago.

He was the undisputed/unified cruiserweight champion. This isn’t strange/unusual/unfair at all.

So?

There's a long tradition where champions who move up get a crack at the next-weight-up title.

In this case, Usyk is an undefeated unified four belt champion and generally seen as the best or second best ever in his weight class.

Takam is a decent introduction to the division, but he really doesn't even need that to be a legitimate contender for a HW title.

What does it matter if he gets a crack at the title after his first fight, the anticipation is that Usyk will be, given his skillset, a contender among the Joshua, Wilder, Fury, Ruiz tangle for best HW... if he fails then at least we know quickly that he isn't among those guys at this weight.

I don't see the point of having Usyk fight gatekeepers and guys floating around the T10 for 2 years until he gets into the mix with the big fights if he feels confident enough to get into the ring with Joshua/Ruiz in his 2nd or 3rd fight.

Would prefer Chisora
Nah, I think Usyk would be like poison, stylistically. Chisora would quit or put in a lackluster like he does against movers and boxers. Takam would've been the best debut opponent even though Chisora is a better fighter on his best day. Too bad it'll probably not happen now. I hope they can get someone, though. Maybe Teper or Wach even?

That mandatory position is not gonna be worth much if the Ruiz v Joshua situation continues to unravel. Wouldn't surprise me if Ruiz bales on AJ and fights Wilder in early 2020 and the winner of that fights Fury. Usyk could maybe fight the winner of that in early 2021 but he would need to get away from Matchroom cause Heyman won't fight a matchroom guy, Fury might consider it as if he wins he'll be undisputed and I'm sure he wouldn't want a guy like Usyk out there who is considered technically very strong and Fury's ego won't let it stand.
