Was Naseem Hamed great or just good?

I would rate him very good. There aren't just good and great fighters. Boxing isn't quite that simple.

Great talent, good career. By the time he had reached the mainstream, he was already preoccupied with becoming an entertainer instead of a prizefighter.

Thought he was great before he was and lost his way. Still a very good fighter and one of the main reasons I got into boxing. Remember watching that Kevin Kelly fight as a kid with my dad in the early hours.

Met him a couple of times as an adult too and he was an absolute gent both times. First time he was Xmas shopping but when he realised I'd spotted him he turned around and made a point of coming to have a chat.

Freakish power, incredible feet but believed his own hype. A shame really.

Better than some like to make out, but that's partly his own doing for being such an arrogant unlikable twat.

Detractors claim he beat bums and lost to the only good fighter he faced but that only works if you class the several world level/long reiging/future and past champions that he beat(often times demolished) as bums.

can't be called great though

@sasquatch, Great? No, Barrrera proved he was good, no more than that , over-rated. Regards Mervyn The gee
Hamed had stopped training when he fought Barrera, he was sparring from his house and basically just trying to lose weight. He had the potential and talent to be one of the best to ever do it, obviously Merv is just a bit of hater.

@nifty. Tech. Why do rate me as a hater, just because I do not think Hamed was great? If he had the potential and talent as you say, how did Barrera make him look so ordinary? Surely you don"t rate some fighters ? that does not mean you hate them.. As I have previously stated, I don"t rate a lot of fighters, but I do not hate any of them. You don"t even know me, so to make such a dramatic statement "That I am a Bit of a Hater" is ludicrous. He had other worldly power for sure and when he was young he had great reflexes but that style of his was fundamentally flawed.

His power got him out of it plenty of times but the Barrera fight showed to me what happened

He stopped training properly a few fights before then and relied on his power but it wasn't enough against barrera.

(of these 10 notable wins he stopped 8)
Robinson
Vasquez
McCullough
Bungu
Solo
Ingle
Kelley
Johnson
Sanchez
Medina

"just good" though :think1

A lot of decent, solid wins, but none of them stand out as particularly spectacular. He needed the Barrera win to certify himself as a great IMO.
