What did you do in work today?

All of my day has been based around knocking an old garage down so that a greenhouse can go up in it's place.

It's all odd jobs for me this week, greenhouse goes up tomorrow so that will probably take all day, then on Thursday, I'm painting a load of fence panels and then I'm off for a couple of weeks.

I use to love demo work since it is mostly a no-brainer as long as you don't cause a structural collapse of things you need to save. Dirty as hell most of the time though.

I've had my hand in rehabbing many homes around my town and a lot of them were 100 or so years old. It's crazy how much dirt accumulates in a house that old, especially with plaster and lath walls.

I tore out 2 walls and the entire roof of my large storage shed last year to rebuild it due to water and old termite damage. Three days and about $1000 later and it was back good as new.

I quite enjoy demo work too, I don't often do a lot of it though. On this particular job the client wanted the bricks saving so we had to be a bit more careful rather than just smash it down so it wasn't as dirty as it could have been.

Hope the client didn't want you to chip off the mortar when saving the bricks. That is S---L---O---W, tedious work at best.

I have a strict no work-talk policy when I'm on my own time. It's boring enough being stuck there for 8 hours a day why the fuck would I want to recount it when I'm at home where I could be doing anything else, like cutting my toenails, which is more fun and interesting than my job. I feel like my job is a massive void of time being sucked out of my life, the best hours of the day being drained away doing fuck all interesting. Christ I can't wait to leave.

Went skateboarding. Light workout. Ate pizza. Went to Trader Joe’s. Nap. Went skateboarding again.

Made thousands in investments today.

What's stopping you from leaving?

Working from home today.

Just received the financials for last month so have to dig into them and send the analysis and commentary out, This will take me a couple of hours. I'm dealing with emails and whatnot whilst doing it though so it's not actually too bad.

Will go to the gym at lunch, which is really the only reason I work from home, tbh. Then this afternoon I WILL makes some progress on this Business plan.

So far today I've:

Had a 20 min chat with a colleague regarding altering strategy for fire and smoke design for a project.

Chatted to mate about kitchens, running and hurling.

Chatted via Google hangout to a real life mate regarding our fantasy football league/draft for the coming season.

Went on lunch.

Back off lunch about an hour or so now and have been doing little since.

Gonna spend and hour or two investigating clash detection reports in one of our 3D models, and then go talk to the BIM team about resolving. Might fix some myself first, to look like a hero /team player as I'm a little bored.

It's only been 3 days, but this Mandela Business plan is a gripping saga.
Nailing down all the assumptions/forecasts is a pain and I'm starting to think a bit pointless as it's next to impossible to be accurate.

Things like average cost of engagement i can get from googling 'average cost of market analytics research' and just take an average of all the results I find. But forecasting these out i.e. 'how many engagements in month 1, 2, 3 etc is pure guesswork.
The big expense will be salaries, as it'll effectively be a business unit within the wider organization so no real start up costs, and I have already found average and median salaries for the types of role i'll need. It's when i get to the next level of expenses I'm struggling...travel, office supplies, marketing, insurances and all that kinda stuff. Very difficult to put a number on, man.

Within seconds of the stock market opening, my profits from yesterday were flushed along with additional thousands...apparently over an algorithm.

Work highlights:
1. Guy from Bangladesh gave me a speech through butchered English about how I’m a great eye doctor (I never saw the guy before). Immediately afterwards he started pleading with me for free glasses. (Men from Bangladesh seem to be the only ones who try to pull this off. I guess haggling with doctors is commonplace over there.)

2. Diabetic had shoulder surgery earlier this week and had either a bloodclot or stroke during surgery. It wiped out his vision on the left eye, which will be permanent. I was able to calm him by the end of the exam, although I know his eye is fucked and, if he’s unlucky, he’ll need a blood clot removed from his brain. I had to do this exam in Spanish.

3. Picked metal out of some guy’s eye.

4. The other doctor who works next to me on Wednesday’s checked his schedule midway through the afternoon and started cursing to himself outside my exam room, but unknowingly projected into my exam room. I had a fourteen y/o Muslim girl and her mom in the room when he started dropping very faggy sounding F bombs on us.

5. Ended the day by warning the staff to avoid an intersection near the clinic because someone got shot there right before the work day finished.

I thought I might have a nice commission check for July ready at the end of the day, but I’ll have to wait longer.

Kinda wish you were Japanese after reading that.

Sounds a crazy job though.

Was going to really break the back of this Business Plan but then realized if i get a new job I won't need to do it and that seems a much more attractive scenario at this point.

Mapped out what expanding our local gov team into Maryland might look like. Projected how much money our team is going to lose based solely on the drop in interest rates, plus another drop pretty much guaranteed in September.
