In football the best trainers don't always make great managers.

He may be a wonderful trainer in the gym but in a corner during a fight he is often like a rabbit in the spotlight with no ability to change tactics when plan A is going wrong.

Degale needs someone better in the corner:someone who can analyse a fight as it happens and develop a different tactical approach and someone who won't be nice for the sake of it but someone with the balls to tell Degale he's being a dickhead.

Would Teddy Atlas done the same for example?
Can't argue with any of that.

Thats all true Jim Mcdonnell is not best corner guy.. but maybe a part of the problem is Degale looking at previous fights tends to ignore whatever advice he is given in the corner... and certainly does not like being criticised.

Jim Mcdonell takes too much stick.

It's fashionable to bash him.Mostly from people who have no idea what his training consists of.
I dunno, I've never rated him as a trainer. I can't remember a time when I've heard him give advice to DeGale that didn't involved "throw more punches". He offers nothing technical for me. Too late to change now though, he just needs to see it through now.

To think that 12 months ago, he was on the cusp of becoming Britains next superstar. He was finally starting to win back the public and fans. He was cheered here! He was about to beat Jack to become unified champion, which would have led into a big domestic unification with Callum Smith and big bucks. That knock down in the final round cost him dearly, as have his idiotic childish antics and interviews in the last year or so.

I think he's done, unless he makes the decision to leave Jim McDonnell and seek out a new trainer, who'll re-motivate and energise him

Jim Mcdonald is an awful trainer whose charges acquire any success despite having him in their corner.

He should have left him a long time ago.

However, it isn't only McDonald's fault. Degale is lazy, arrogant and if rumours are true, doesn't live the life style required. He is motivated by money too.

I honestly think there's a possibility that he'll realise that he has nothing left to offer the sport at the top level and walk but if his greed for money remains insatiable then he will end up with some embarrassing defeats against the elite and eventually against B level fighters.

Eubank Jr absolutely batters him btw.
Its been one of them relationships where they pretty much suit each other and deserve each other imo.

McDonnell just reminds me of a rat and bugs the shit out of me with the way he near chases Degale after the fight and tries to fill his head with shite.Pretty sure he told Degale it was a draw just before the result was announced against Truax.

He didn't come across as very urgent in the corner to be honest. If Truax hadn't got that fight it would have been a travesty of justice. McDonnell has am always has been known as a great conditioner but why isn't he known as a teacher and a tactician? He boxed himself at the very top level. I think theres a strong possibility the well has run dry with Degale, amateur and pro for what seems like forever with never an easy opponent. For Gods sake people were even criticising the choice of Truax on this forum. Shows how much they know. he's no GGG fair enough and I think James if he is to continue absolutely MUST chase the return but too many hard fights mate.

I honestly don't think that would make any difference at all mate.
