What was Larry Merchants purpose as an announcer?

Im rewatching a lot of boxing over the last 2 decades and Merchant consistently has me muting the commentary. Either shitting on the fighters or getting into arguments with the other announcers. I watch boxing from different countries, never is it so unprofessional or shitting on the fighters in other broadcasts.

For instance, this is Ward's first fight on HBO. Ward coming off winning the supersix as an underdog. Dawson was coming off beating Hopkins and his only blemish was a cuts stoppage against Pascal. HBO should be doing their best to hype this fight up. 2 rounds in "These two guys would rather watch a fight of the year than be in one". WTF? Kellerman throughout the telecast is doing his best to explain the dynamics of the fight. The reason why Ward is winning, being a tighter quick fighter, getting his lead foot on the outside of Dawsons and why thats important ect. Merchant on the other hand "Ward is punching more" lmao. Yeah great analysis Larry. Of course Kellerman is audibly annoyed throughout because Merchant is being an old drunk boomer geriatric little bitch throughout.

This was actually really good fight. Ward took more punishment trying to KO Dawson than I remember. Dawson fought back admirably and was probably greatly effected by the weight loss which weakened his legs. Very good fight all around. Tactical with bursts of extreme violence. What makes boxing unique. Instead we get Merchant "Ward will rather tip toe than burst through the door".

I remember people actually liking Merchant back in the day, and I gotta say Merchant and whoever liked his shit commentary is one of the many reasons boxing fell off the face of the sporting world.

That's because he had a real love of the sport. Also a very good "commentator" voice. He was also reasonably knowledgable, though not at the level of Max or Paulie. And he never worried about saying something controversial, which is to be commended whether you agreed with him or not.

Sure, at the end of his run, Merchant basically became your drunken uncle at the Thanksgiving table, but he was great at one time.
OK, not "great" but very good.

Yes. Shitting on fighters after they've gotten punched in the head a few dozen times in the most physically demanding sport on the planet is controversial. Being controversial for controversies sake is classless and makes a mockery of the sport.

He was a decent sportswriter some years ago, but never better than a mediocre analyst. Of course anyone would appear an expert sitting next to that buffoon Lampley babbling about punchstats. Merchant had to be on more than the drink when he insinuated that he'd have mixed it with Floyd were he a younger man. Delusional asshole.

Really impressed with Hopkins' response.

Floyd resorted to a dumb ''you don't know shit'' and then walked away.

Mayweather's response was more entertaining but I agree, B-Hop handled him with class and he would have been forgiven if he just lost it. Everyone has checked Merchant, I remember RJJ insisting that Merchant does too much talking and that he'll be doing the talking tonight lol that was great I wish I could remember which post-fight interview that was.

I'd love to see that one too!

Merchant turned into an annoying drunk who did his best to capitalize on his mic time during his tenure. Personally, I found him very annoying.

He and George Foreman agreed to disagree more often than not when they were on the same commentary team-------and I took George's word over Larry's on the basis of sheer amount of experience he had as a fighter and actually knowing what he was looking at.

He was there for the engertainme t value more than anything.
Also you chose an example when he was 80 and in his last months of his career.
Basically like shitting on Joe Louis for getting knocked out by Marciano.

I actually kinda liked him as I look back.

Even though I remember being annoyed with him at times.
